Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

Under the PlexMediaServer/AppData/MetaData/Movies as well as TV Shows there are lots of folders with data in them going down several levels

Correction: The folder is PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/MetaData/

Knowing this, my concern here is where your actual movies and files are.

I am glad to see you have a master /Media shared folder . EXCELLENT

Please allow me to ask – Do you have ANY media files which ‘got lost’ and ended up in “PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/something” because they had previously been buried like that in the “Plex share”?

Putting media in the Plex shared folder is VERY frowned on,

I placed warnings in the 6 most commonly spoken languagesd to NOT place media anywhere there.

Continuing that theme, I have placed warnings in TWO sets in the new PlexMediaServer shared folder.
I did the upgrade without uninstalling Plex, and then tried to use the repair function, followed by uninstalling Plex and re-installing.
Do you have any media which ended up in /PlexMediaServer/AppData/PlexMediaServer/Media/*something*

I didn’t put any media in the Plex or PlexMediaServer folder. I have all of the movie files under the Media folder. They seem to be all there and don’t have any issues when I try to play them directly from File Station. I not aware of anything missing or damaged. I obviously didn’t try everything as there are way to many files to do that.
Very early on, before I got Plex up and running many years ago, I did create the folders under Plex/Library/ etc. with the intent of placing media there, but figured out that was not a good idea after reading a lot about the setup. I never actually put files there.

Good. Thank you. That confirms all your media is accounted for and why “TV Shows” and “Movies” exists.

Given everything seems to be where it belongs,

If I am understanding your symptoms correctly, all which remains to do is grant permissions to your “/Media” shared folder and extend those permissions recursively into that shared folder to grab all your files in one shot.

In the same spirit FAQ 19 is written for DSM 6, we only need change the name to PlexMediaServer for DSM 7.

The rest of the procedure remains unchanged

You will perform this on your master /Media shared folder.

At the end of the FAQ, please take note of “Apply to this folder , sub-folders and files”.

It’s important that all your media , down in the nested sub-folders, are all visible to PlexMediaServer.

Sound easy?

Yes, it sounds easy. Didn’t work the first time until I remembered that you have to select local user from the drop down (which I had previously done for the Plex and PlexMediaServer, but just forgot).

I didn’t realize that you had to give permissions to the folders independently from the users.

I now have a problem with an error of :
“Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install”
with every piece of media in my collection. However, the videos will play just fine when opened directly from inside File Station.
What do I need to do with this?

May I see that log file ZIP ?

There is a reason for that. Either DNS or corrupt codec file. I need to detmine.
I suspect incomplete / corrupt codec file.

Is that under the PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Logs ?
If yes, do you want all of the files in this directory?

Thanks

The Zipped directory of that is 32.75MB. If that is what you are looking for, what is the best way to get that to you?

@EE816

I’m surprised to see it that big. Had you previously told it to keep more than the default 5 log files ? (sounds like you had)

I really only need the ‘main’ plus 5 (.1 → .5) rollover versions,

That should be about 5 MB when zipped. You can include 1-9 if you’re so inclined

The forum should allow up to 35 MB ZIP

Logs.zip (26.1 MB)
Here is the log file without the PMS Plugin Logs

I will send the PMS Plugin Logs separately as the limit was 30MB

Logs-2.zip (4.9 MB)
Here is the PMS Plugin Logs

@EE816

I’m seeing DNS lookup failures in your logs. They aren’t consistent.

how do you have the DNS resolver addresses defined? ISP modem / router or google direct (8.8.8.8)?

I didn’t set anything for that. In my router it’s set to get DNS from the ISP. I’m on Comcast.
I don’t give any of my devices alternate names, but just use the actual local address to get to them (i.e. the 192.168.etc.) I don’t know if I have answered your question.

@EE816

Control Panel - Network - Network Interface - EDIT the adapter.

You probably have DHCP from comcast

I use Comcast’s DNS plus add my own.

On Synology, you can split it.

  1. Start with seeing the DHCP values

  1. Now flip it to manual. change only the DNS to google – 8.8.8.8 and test further.

Do I have to do something like restart the NAS? I didn’t do that yet, but I did restart Plex.
I get the same error of: Playback Error. Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install.

The test.MKV file in the root of the Media folder still plays, but won’t play in its original location.

Also, alot, if not all, of the custom thumbnails for the videos appears to be gone now.

Grab the logs
 I need to see them.

If you want to do the following –

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Delete everything in the “Logs” folder
  3. Start Plex
  4. wait 2 minutes
  5. Recreate the test
  6. Let it fail
  7. Download the logs ZP
  8. Attach here

Plex Transcoder Statistics.1.log (650 Bytes)
Plex Transcoder Statistics.2.log (650 Bytes)
Plex Transcoder Statistics.3.log (650 Bytes)
Plex Transcoder Statistics.log (650 Bytes)
I followed the recommended list you had. I first opened a video file that failed with the previous error. I then opened the test.mkv file, which played just fine, but did not create any log entries. I then tried to play another file as the first time, which then failed and produced the next two log entries.

Trnscoder stats dont tell me what broke.

PMS.log would.
