@ChuckPa
This is what shows up on my screen:
The one you advised me to download seems to be a …DSM6.SPK
Could that be the cause?

@ChuckPa
This is what shows up on my screen:
Well !
The logs you gave me are from DSM 6 so I gave you the DSM 6 package.
You will want this package
Did you click Repair in your upgrade to DSM 7 ?
@ChuckPa
I’ll come back to you tomorrow. It’s late over here.
Thanks anyhow.

No problem! Sleep well!
I just tried installing the latest DSM 7 for my Synology and it is not adding the Plex User at all. I tried it a couple of weeks ago and still had the same issue so I can’t find any of my movie folders…
This is a fresh install of the latest Plex software for Synology (just downloaded the 64 bit version from the website). PlexMediaServer-1.24.5.5173-8dcc73a59-x86_64_DSM7.spk
DSM 7.0.1-42218
DS1821+
AMD Ryzen V1500B Processor
32GB RAM
What am I missing? Do I need to manually create the Plex user and manually apply all of the permissions?
There is no Plex user in DSM 7. That’s all obsolete.
In DSM 7.0-41890 and above, with PMS 1.24.2.4973 and above, our final configuration worked out being:
System Internal User: PlexMediaServer which gets added by DSM when the package is installed.
DSM-managed shared folder PlexMediaServer which DSM creates at installation then maintains the permissions of every time PMS starts
Where are you at in the process?
Did you have a previous DSM 6 installation or is this new ?
REF:
@ChuckPa
After installing 5173 again one time i made a new setup and Synology is alive and kicking.
I had to remove the “old” Synology server and all shares are now visible and reachable again.
Thanks for helping me out.
Have many nice days!

I didn’t know about this whole migration process until it was too late- I upgraded to DSM 7, hit “repair” on Plex, and it prompted me to add new libraries. Meanwhile, my old server can’t be reached at all on Plex. I don’t mind adding everything over again, but I spent a lot of time with custom covers etc. that I don’t want to redo. Is there a way to get my old server back online?
NOT a problem. “Repair” just adds a few more steps.
Confirm all your metadata (DSM 6 server) still resides in the “Plex” shared folder. NOTE: It will and must reside there until the final step where it actually does move to DSM 7 format & structure
Uninstall + Erase option that screwy PMS version which is tagged BETA (1.21.x.3744)
Now install PMS as downloaded from Plex.tv/downloads
It should complain about “PlexMediaServer does not have full control of the Plex share” (words to that effect)
Now pick up here in my migration instructions (screenshots included) which show the easiest way to set permissions for the transition from DSM 6 → DSM 7.
If, when you perform the migration, you still have your metadata in the “Plex” shared folder, another round of Uninstall + Erase might be needed.
It does happen for some but not all therefore be certain , or ask, before using ERASE again
Cool, about to try that. Just to confirm, Uninstall and Erase will not erase my media files? I know it sounds silly, I just gotta confirm.
Uninstall == Uninstalls the Plex app (not the Plex server info)
Uninstall + Erase == Uninstall the Plex app and erase the Plex Server info (DSM 7 only)
At no time do I look at any media.
The ONLY chance of you losing media is if you placed your media INSIDE the “Plex Media Server” directory down in the Plex share or PlexMediaServer share and co-mingled it with the application files (where it never should be)
Thank you!! The key for me was Uninstall + Erase and restarting Synology after the erase.
Did it do the migration correctly for you?
(Plex shared folder now empty – everything moved to PlexMediaServer)
It did! Thanks again for your help, I was getting frustrated.
it’s showing me Plex running, as if it’s already been installed. See screenshot.
If clicked to open, I’m asked to add libraries as if starting from scratch, is that what I’m supposed to do? I added read/write permissions but got no further popup instructions.
I understand I should now get “Full Control of the “Plex” shared folder”. Thing is, though, I have a folder called Plex, which contains some generic videos but the main library is in a folder called Video, which is then split into Movies and Shows. Can I rename the “Plex” folder to something else? It says “Plex metadata storage” in Control Panel-Shared folder-Edit.
Using FileStation,
Please look in Plex shared folder.
Do you see “Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server” ?
The answer there will determine my next question and instructions.
Problem has occurred this evening, can no longer sign into plex via the synology app, can log in via a URL. Double clicking on plex icon on Synology dash simply times out
Also, what is the difference between server being nearby and local?
OK, on restart of plex I can sign in again but now server is marked as remote even though I am signed in using the the plex web app actually on the synology server where the plex server is installed. All connections between devices are cat 7 ethernet.
Don’t unless your server is known fully operational. This is because Synology now injects their ‘quickconnect.to’ domain name and goes outside your LAN and then comes back in from the outside… NOT COOL. Plex knows when to go outside your LAN and when to stay on the inside where it belongs.
I was wondering about that. Server marked as nearby if I sign in using 192.1…etc but remote if via quick connect. I use the plex HTPC app and have set manual server addresses to correspond with both the ethernet ports of the synology server. Thanks for your reply, appreciated
