Synology edit of a share to new volume

I’ve read a lot about moving the Plex share but can’t find anything on library moves.

I’ve recently run out of room so I added additional drives and created a new volume (volume2). I then edited the share for a library called TV, I changed the location from Volume1 to Volume2, Synology then helpfully moves everything. This works fine with the likes of Kodi because it sees the same share and has no idea it’s been moved. Plex, however, locates the files for the Synology server with the full path so includes the Volume1 reference. Plex seems to add new items in that library just fine but it doesn’t seem to fix the file location of moved files even with a full scan.

I ended up deleting my entire TV library in Plex and re-added it with new location but surely there is a better way. I have 2 other libraries I moved as well.

Anyone know how this is done? Why doesn’t Plex just use the Share rather than explicit path?

If you want to actually move the media from one share to another and retain the watched status along with any customization you’ve done

  1. Settings - server - Library : Turn off automatic update, Turn off empty trash after each scan.
  2. Move the data.
  3. Add the new share to the list of folders for that library.
  4. As that new share path gets added, PMS will start scanning it.
  5. You’ll observe as you now appear to have duplicates. This is expected and normal.
  6. When everything shows as duplicate, Edit the Library again remove the original location.
  7. Observe it scan again and duplicate tagging be removed.
  8. When all share & library moving has been completed, Go back into Settings - Server - Library and re-enable automatic updates, empty trash
  9. Perform one last scan to remove all the old pathnames from the database

Thanks for that. All my TV shows are in the one share so it seems just deleting that library and adding again is easier. It would be great if there was a path editing tool at a global level so you can just update all files on Vol 1 to Vol 2.

The problem with doing that is the entire PMS server would have to be edited while shut down or, at minimum, all other activity locked out.

If you know SQL and are willing to make the changes yourself, you can do it. Be advised, should you hose the database, it’s also on you to restore from one of your backups.
