I have 3 Synology NAS boxes that I’ve tried this on… DS215J, DS218J, DS418. They are all doing the same thing. When I create a library, I cannot add folders below the first level folder. For example, if I try to add /video/downloads, all I can see is the /video folder, but cannot see the /downloads folder below when I try to browse to it. If I type the full path in the selection text box, “/video/downloads”, it still does not work because it doesn’t see anything in that folder and nothing gets added. I tried running Plex on my PC, and I can add that same folder on my NAS which is mapped as a network drive on my PC. It browses to that folder just fine. But this is a crazy work-around and I’d like to get this thing to work as I think it’s supposed to work! I’m not sure what to do. If anyone can advise me on this, I’d appreciate it. I’ve searched extensively online for answers but cannot find anything addressing this specific issue. Any help is appreciated.
On Linux, one user account can’t see another user’s files without expressly granted permission. This is how Plex is implemented on Synology; as a regular user account versus being an all-powerful administrative user.
If I may suggest, while you’re setting this up,
Make a shared folder (Control Panel - Shared Folders) freestanding instead of using the Synology defaults. Synology defaults have the habit of erasing previously granted permission.
The procedure to give permission to Plex is included here.
Wow! Thank you for the quick and informative response! I probably should have dug around a bit more before posting because I had a feeling it was a permissions issue. But it is good to get the correct information from here, and hopefully will help others that search the forum for their issue. Your response was of course the solution and I can browse the folders to add my libraries. You made me very happy, thanks!
In Synology’s eyes, their products (Video Station, Audio Station, and Photo Station) work perfectly. They have no concerns about 3rd party apps. (they never have)
