Synology has automatic updates built-in to their package center, though the Plex package they offer is old. It’s not a huge deal to manually download the .spk from Plex and install it on the NAS, but it’s also not ideal.
The simple solution would be for Plex (or fans?) to maintain a package source which Synology’s package center can use to update from.
Oh please, I hope this exists – or is simple to implement. Anyone have ideas or info?
Plex submits the current public to Synology with each release. When Synology decides to publish it in Package Center is out of Plex’s control.
Since DSM 6, I’ve functionally given up on it. I don’t know the details or who’s even involved but it definitely could be a ****load better than what it is now.
It’s been a little while since I’ve used Plex on my Synology, but if I remember correctly, doesn’t Plex’s built-in update mechanism on the settings page work correctly for updating? If I recall, this wasn’t reflected in Synology’s Package Center, but it does show the new version in Plex itself.
PMS doesn’t update itself on Synology. Package Center does the automatic updating if it’s enabled (just like DSM automatic updates / installation).
Package Center changed a little bit in DSM 6. Maybe it works as it should now? hehehehe
Please check the auto update settings … Here’s where I’m specifically referring.
@ChuckPA I must have been thinking about one of my other Synology packages. 
Regardless, I tried to fire up my old Plex install on my Syno with DSM 5.2 to test this out, and it won’t even start anymore anyway. Even tried to uninstall, delete that stuff listed in your FAQ via SSH (which was already gone,) restarted, reinstall new version from Plex. Still no joy. Oh well, I give up. I’ll just stick to my “good” server. Was hoping to have a “Backup Plex”.
Did that get it? On Windows, PMS does have a self-updater because it ‘Windows’. DSM, because it’s Linux-based, doesn’t. It has to be gated by the OS-controlled software update mechanism (aka… root)
