Why is there no autoupdate option on Synology NAS? I realize Synology hasn’t ever officially support Plex Media Server, but other non-supported apps (i.e., Channels DVR) are able to autoupdate without needing to download and manually install the update.
Is there a way to contact the developers to suggest this?
Auto update for Synology does exist.
The problem is getting Synology to publish our releases.
There are a few tools out there, which run under Task Scheduler, to download the right SPK for your machine and then install it.
I’ve been trying to get a Synology repository setup which would then download from https://plex.tv/downloads independently
There has been progress but getting time from the folks to implement it has been dificult.
I run syno.plexupdate.sh and it works pretty well.
I waits a week after finding a new version before it updates.
Synology is saying it’s a Plex issue – Plex isn’t submitting to Synology for testing for it to be available as an auto-update. Is that so, or am I being fed a line of BS?
I honestly wouldn’t auto-update something like Plex unless it’s like how AvatharV has it set up, or if it only waits for widespread releases. Plex has broken many things throughout their lifetime with updates - no software company is perfect in this regard. I generally wait a couple of days and check the forum to see if people are screaming bloody murder over the latest update.
Plus there’s also meaningless-to-me updates like the current PMS 1.32 beta that simply ends support for previous Windows and Mac devices that I don’t have, provides updates for QNAP and Windows that I don’t use, and helps subtitles for foreign languages that I don’t need.
They are sent release notices, with links to all our packages every time a version goes to Public status.
Getting those packages reviewed and published doesn’t happen automatically as it was setup
BETA would never be sent. That would be just foolish. Really?
It was more of a general statement of why auto-updating is not really a good idea on a product that is used in so many different ways. Things can still be broken for some people in even stable releases. I mean there are posts all over here with people still having issues with 1.29 and 1.30 releases.
Since Plex operates on many different devices and has people with many different configurations, it’s never going to be perfect for everyone, and that’s why I was saying to check the announcements to see if you even need the update in the first place (if not, then updating can only either not change anything for you or potentially break something), and then check the other parts of the forum for your specific devices for issues and potential fixes.
Thanks for clarifying and I agree.
Then you get those who think the world revolves around their usage of Plex and when it’s not perfect… hell gets raised
It seems like Synology is just throwing Plex under the bus here.
From Synology support:
I would like to clarify further that Synology is not able to provide auto-update for the Plex package since Synology does not maintain or have access to the package itself until it is submitted by Plex. The updated Plex package will go through a review and testing process before it is verified and released onto Synology Package Center, to see if there are any conflicts or issues that occur. The process may take some time before it is released compared to the updates released on the Plex website. Therefore Synology cannot provide an auto-update for any newer update Plex version that have been currently released until it has been submitted.
Synology is unable to provide auto-update for third party packages such as Plex, as it is dependent on Plex to provide the package for submittal to Package Center. Even then the newer/updated version of Plex will need to go through strenuous testing to ensure that there are no issues that will conflict or occur when installed on the NAS.
That’s how it rolls.
Their position is " We produce a NAS ".
They don’t like us but they need us for the sales.
They begged us to be ready for DSM 7.0 launch (PMS 1.21.0.3744)
When DSM 7 became final release, I finalized the package. (PMS 1.24.2 timeframe)
I had to lobby with then to get Package Center updated from 1.21.0.3744 to 1.29.2.6364.
It’s always been “Throw Plex under the bus. We do nothing wrong”.
I can cite an example where:
- Synology NAS
- Synology labeled HDDs
- Synology labeled SSDs
- SSDs configured as the volume cache
- PMS database is corrupted
- Synology tech support thought the chassis was defective and replaced it.
- Replace SSDs as well, database still corrupts.
Turn off the DSM 7 cache – everything works fine.
Cache is an OS-level function but they maintain it’s Plex’s fault.
Have another ?
Their GUI is nice – but dated as heck now.
None of the products offer a ‘prosumer’ CPU option. (a v1500b is not prosumer)
I built my own and was done with it. Not the best but i got exactly the workhorse I need for work and Plex.
I had a missed call from Synology tech support. First time they’ve ever called me over any tech support issue. Sadly, I missed the call (phone was on vibrate).
