I have a Synology NAS and I am setting up a new Plex server on a Windows Server PC. I have seen the guides for transferring the database which seems easy enough, but the concern is that I named the Plex server something different on the Windows Server PC. If copy over all of the app data to the new Windows Server Plex, will the Server having a different name cause an issue with play histories and such transferring? The users will all be the same.
The server name is not important for transferring your Plex metadata from one machine to the other.
What is however important is the difference in the storage location of the actual media files between different operating systems.
And that cannot be solved.
Synology (Linux)
/volume_3/share2/Movies/My Awesome Movie (2023).mkv
Windows
E:\Movies\My Awesome Movie (2023).mkv
It’s not a big deal for “match-able” titles (i.e. those for which Plex can fetch metadata automatically).
But for media where you have supplied metadata by hand, they might get lost due to the difference in path names.
