Synology Plex server suddenly stuttering on every EAC3 track!

Server Version#: 1.30.0.6486
Player Version#: 4.87.2 (Plex Web)

I’ve had most of my library encoded for a few years already… When Synology DSM 7 Plex V 1.29 came out with the HW encoding enabled I immediately switched and have been very happy… playing locally, via wifi in another state or even via cellular across the country. Suddenly though it seems like ANY video with an EAC3 track (which for me has been ANY movie that doesn’t come with a AC3 track) is now stuttering even though HW transcoding is on and working. This is happening on Roku players, iPhone, Android, and now I just confirmed it’s happening on the web browser of my desktop which I use to manage my Synology.

The only device where all these files play as expected is my LG TV, and this is using direct play. All the other devices are transcoding the audio.

All of these files play fine directly in VLC on the desktop. I’ve also installed the Windows Plex app and it also stutters.

I’ve applied the recommendation in FAQ #16… I only had 494 folders and set the number to 65,536. This unfortunately didn’t change anything.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Update… I tried to play a file in my browser again and the only log message that showed up was:

Dec 15, 2022 10:40:30.411 [0x7fe43a985b38] Info — [Req#66e/Transcode] CodecManager: starting EAE at “/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/tmp/pms-2dac4b5c-0eed-49e9-8184-f1e0fbb23d7d/EasyAudioEncoder”

Please recreate it and download the logs please

After that, please back down to 1.29.2

We’re tracking an issue with TrueHD audio and EAC3, being dolby, might be related.

ChuckPa,

Quick question… when uninstalling Plex you get this prompt:

if I select the final RED option, I take it this will delete the entire configuration and make me start from scratch? I don’t want to do that…

Attached are the logs prior to searching for and installing 1.29.2. I tried to play a video with an EAC3 5.1 1,536 soundtrack prior to exporting.

I stopped 1.30.0, deleted the logs directory, and then uninstalled (uninstall only). Finally, I installed 1.29.2 for DSM7 and then tried to play the same file. It did the skipping thing again. Here’s the new log dump from 1.29.2…

I am also going to walk back a statement in my original post. I cannot verify that EAC3 audio transcoding worked in the past. In reviewing my play history in Tautulli, I discovered that all the movies we’ve watched in our camper while traveling have luckily had AC3 soundtracks and not EAC3. In November when the issue was first discovered we tried to watch the Princess Bride which had an EAC3 soundtrack, and the backup movie pick happened to have an AC3 soundtrack.

I did notice that some TV shows I watched remotely have an EAC3 192kbps soundtrack and these played fine. It appears as though the issue only occurs with 1,536 kbps encodings.
