System freezes

I’ve done a lot of reading and trying different things but I can’t seem to pinpoint my issue. I’ve determined it not my system itself, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten, I’ll explain.

Problem started with my system would freeze and I was unable to do anything, couldn’t bring up Task Manager or anything. Mouse would move but system would not allow me to do anything. I then noted that if I restarted the system with the Ethernet cable unplug I can then at least get a stable system to work on. The system tray would show Plex Server running but I couldn’t get to the app to do anything. So even though I’m not connected to anything the Plex Server App should still run right?

Anyway I tried different ways to get it working, I plugged the Ethernet back in but unplugged my NAS and again booted up fine But still couldn’t get the Plex Server App to come up. Sometimes I could by going direction to my account on the Plex Website and hitting launch there but not from the icon on the system tray.

After all of this I decided to uninstall and reload the server and still can’t get the app to come up. And I’m not sure how to load any logs without the app up.

Any help that gets me going in the right direction would be much appreciated. If there is a way to upload logs without the app please let me know and if the uninstall didn’t delete them I will load them up. It’s been doing this for well over a month now. Very frustrating…

Thanks for any help that gets me back up and running.

BTW running a Synology NAS on Plex Server latest version on Windows 10 with full updates.

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2571
Player Version#:

ok I’ve found my Logs, do I just zip and upload?

How long does it usually take to get help? I can’t even load Plex right now because it freezes my system so I could really use some help please.

So is the server still freezing or is it just Plex not opening from the system tray?
Can you open Plex from…

  • the hosted version of Plex Web -> http://app.plex.tv/desktop
  • the locally installed version of Plex Web
    • http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
if your browser is on the same machine as the PMS
    • http://[IP address of the server]:32400/web
if the server is installed on a different machine in your home network
  • a different client (e.g. Plex for Windows, Plex Media Player…)

??

Right now my set up is I have a Gaming PC that I run the Plex Software on and a Synology NAS on the network. I did move the Metadata location to the NAS so not sure if that could be causing a problem but I don’t think so since I’ve loaded with the NAS not connected to the Network and when I load Plex Server it freezes my system. As of right now anything I do with Plex Server App freezes my system.

I was able to ope Plex with http://app.plex.tv/desktop but of course it wasn’t seeing my files because the server isn’t running. I’m afraid to start up the Server App for fear of it freezing my system again. The App is installed locally but I could not get that to open.

You shouldn’t disconnect the Plex app from its data (database, metadata, artwork…). At least not while the Plex Media Server app cannot reliably connect to that location.
Also keep in mind… moving the data folder to an external drive will cause a significant performance impact.

If Plex cannot see its data folder, it might consider to be a new install and create a new database etc.

That being said… loading your media from a separate external drive is no issue at all (while it might be helpful to take some precautions such as disabling automatic updates and emptying Plex’ trash after every update in order not to lose your library data).

If I stated it wrong I apologize but at no time did I disconnect the NAS server while the plex server was running. I did however disconnect it before rebooting to see if that helped and it did not because the Plex Server App was still set to load on startup so any action I took after the system was up and running caused it to freeze.

I did consider the updates might consider it a new install if it didn’t see the data folder but I have tried to install the last update both with the server connected and not connected and in either case it does the same thing when I tell the installer to load Plex after installation. Any action after PMS app is installed freezes the system.

The reason I moved my data folder was simple for back up reasons which I now realize I still could have left on the computer running the PMS and then just backed up the files to the NAS Server. But even after doing that I’ve had no performance issues until recently (about a month). And to be honest I had no idea there was a Plex’ trash, if I can ever get the server up and running properly I’ll be sure to look for and empty that.

But to be honest I don’t really see how any of this helps my problem. I’m almost ready to just reload my computer and see if that helps but I’ve ready a few other threads with similar problems in which reloading did not help. HOWEVER I did get a new M2 chip for my system I’ve been wanting to reload my system on so I just may do that anyway. It can’t hurt the only thing I use this system for is gaming and for the PMS.

Don’t. Never move the Plex data folder to a network share. This is a recipe for database corruption. It will never work (reliably).

Ok I have totally reloaded my system and I’m in the process of trying to get everything back up and running to where I can move the Metadate location to a local drive. I was able to get PMS loaded and running however it can’t find my server. At this point I’m willing to start all over and recreate everything. But I can’t figure out how to add a new server and start over. Any Help is MUCH appreciated!!!

Hell at this point I’m so frustrated I’ll even pay someone to log into my system with TeamViewer or something and figure out how to fix my Screw UP… I’ve always told friends and family I know just enough about computer to really screw things up and this just proves it…
