One of the biggest problems I face when using Plex is decision paralysis—there are so many options that it becomes difficult to choose something to watch. To solve this, I’m suggesting a tool that lets users create their own channels based on playlists or collections of their content, with the additional option to generate channels automatically by genre or other variables.
Here’s how it works: imagine you’ve created a “Workplace Comedy” collection. This would also become a Workplace Comedy channel, and instead of you manually selecting what to watch next, the channel automatically plays what’s in the collection. For example, it could be 12 minutes into an episode of Parks and Recreation, with The Office coming up next. You’d select and browse channels like you would in a TV channel guide, giving you hundreds of channels all based on your own content. “Oh, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is on the Animals channel and it just started!” There you would see all the metadata for that particular film if it were currently highlighted.
These channels wouldn’t actually stream anything until you start watching them—they’d just track timestamps for where you’d be in each show. This would also clean up the “Continue Watching” section, which often gets cluttered with shows I’m not actively binging if I watch playlists how they currently function.
The best part is that this idea doesn’t require any drastic changes to Plex. It builds on features already in place, making it a practical and simple enhancement to the user experience.
