Tags in FLAC files

Hi All,

I’m running into an issue with FLAC tags for Artist, Album Artist and Contributing Artist (depending on the tagger you use). I have a few folders which contain (from various sources) top-40 songs from a specific year. These songs are all in FLAC format and are tagged with album name being Top 40 1987, etc. The Album Artist & Contributing artist are both set to the correct artist for the song, as is the title. That said, Plex doesn’t seem to pick up the artist correctly in most cases. In fact, it shows no artist at all for the song, with some exceptions. The exceptions where it does show the artist don’t appear to have their tags set differently at all. They look exactly the same (Album and Contributing artist set to the correct artist for the song).
Has anyone come across this issue? It’s almost like Plex just doesn’t understand the tags (but the windows explorer reads them fine, as does MP3Tag).

If I read your post correctly, it sounds like you have a lot of files from different albums all in a single folder. If so, that’s going to be a problem for Plex, no matter how complete and correct your tags might be.

The Album Artist must be identical for all tracks on an album. In this type of ‘various artist’ albums, the typical strategy is to make the Album Artist literally “Various Artists,” and the “Artist” tag the actual individual artist for the track.

Thank you! That seems to have done it.
What is the proper way to refresh the tags by the way? Refresh Metadata or Analyze? It appears I needed to do both for the tags to update in Plex.

Refresh Metadata. ‘Analyze’ is more about letting the server read the encoding of the files. It’s normally done automatically. I’ve rarely needed to use it.
