I’m struggling with some recent audio rips (.flac) of compilations, which are not carrying through the track artist into the view. Older rips through iTunes (.mp3) have this.
I can see the correct tags in MediaInfo, so I think the new (.flac) encodes are correct.
I’ve best described the situation with a screengrab

Could you please post the contents of the Plex XML info of one of the tracks?

Now look into the properties of your music library. On the ‘Advanced’ tab, is “Prefer local metadata” checked?
My next logical step was to use a different FLAC encoder, currently using EAC to rip CD’s
The encoder won’t make a difference. Use a metadata editor to see if the “artist” and the “album artist” tags are actually set as expected. A cross-platform one is Kid3 https://kid3.kde.org/
i thought that’s what MediaInfo was doing? Ill check out kid3 too
Mediainfo doesn’t show too many metadata fields.
I am not sure that ‘performing artist’ is actually what is known elsewhere as ‘artist’ /‘track artist’.
I used the Kid3 to import tags from Discogs? and then showed pms the edited .flac files and scanned the folder again
The compilation flag is not used by Plex at all.
Please explain your issues with VA albums.
With older VA albums iTunes encoded .mp3 the metadata presented correctly, with an Album Artist of Various Artists and the Artist is correct;
I found that my newer .flac files weren’t so lucky!
I can see that on the .flac that ID3 tag is populated?

What happens if you simply ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the album or the whole ‘Various Artists’?
I see the thumbnail refresh, but no metadata changes for that Album, its very strange!
Can you zip up one (preferably) short track and PM it to me?

Hm, that’s spelling done by the Kingfish… 
Something’s wonky in there.
The file properties dialog of Windows does show me a ‘participating artist’ and an ‘album artist’ tag. But ‘album artist’ is not shown as ‘Various Artists’.
However, my go-to metatag editor shows only a ‘track artist’.
So, I think what ever is tagged in there, it’s incorrect.
Is it possible that some software has written id3 tags into it, although they are invalid for flac files (gotta use Vorbis tags in there).
I’ll send it back to you with added ‘album artist’ tag.
