Plex is OBSESSED with using the wrong music artist

Plex is OBSESSED with using the wrong music artist for an audio file no matter what I do.

The audio is a remix by one artist (Marc Burt) of another artists (Frau Holle) song. No combination of folder name, file name, external editing of MP3 ID tags or editing the artist name in the web tool will break Plex's obsession with changing the artist name back to "Frau Holle" when it should be "Marc Burt".

Why is Plex so ignorant to do things its way even when the user is very specific with what is correct?

Plex only reads the embedded meta tags when you add a file the first time into a Plex library.
After that, it won’t pick up changes you made to the embedded meta data.
Hence the Plex Dance is needed. (With music, step 4 of the dance can be omitted)

Here are some tips regarding music

multi-disc albums

handling singles and EP’s

possible ‘side car’ files for music

soundtracks and ‘various artists’

But why won’t it accept changes made using it’s own web browser interface? Why is it impossible to change “Album Artist”?

#4

Without seeing the file name and the folder structure it is residing in, I cannot even try an explanation.

Here’s my favorite discussion on this topic:

This problem has happened again, with a different artist. The album folder was named “perfectly”. (By Plex standards.) The songs were named perfectly. The file ID tags were perfect.

I copied the album folder to the Plex server and it decided itself that the works was of a different (wrong) artist.

Now Plex refuses any attempts to correct the artist name.

What the fack is wrong with this software ??

Where did you point your library? (folder name)

Where are the tracks of this album stored (again, folder names, folder structure, file names.)

Is the line ‘Local Media Assets’ in the topmost position under
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - last.fm ?

Are you aware that there is not only an ‘Artist’ meta tag but also an ‘AlbumArtist’ meta tag?
The latter is very important in Plex.

/srv/av/music/

… not that the file path of my server matters …

Where are the tracks of this album stored (again, folder names, folder structure, file names.)

Example: /srv/av/music/Marc Burt - Poles Apart/01 Poles Apart.mp3

Is the line ‘Local Media Assets’ in the topmost position under
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - last.fm ?

No. It is Local Media Assets. All other options are UNCHECKED. Nothing should be invading and screwing with the ID tag metadata.

Yes. I said all ID tag data was perfect before Plex facked it up. AlbumArtist is exactly what Plex is obsessed with doing it’s own (wrong) way.

When you edit your music library,
go to the ‘Advanced’ tab
what is selected as ‘Agent’ ?

Is the check mark set for ‘use embedded tags’ ?

Have you tried an additional folder level for the AlbumArtist?
This is supported.
/srv/av/music/Marc Burt/Poles Apart (2017)/01 Poles Apart.mp3

Do you know the Plex Dance ?
(you can omit step 4 with music)

Was “last.fm”. Changed to “Personal Media Artists” and did a “Scan Library Files”. Plex now allows the AlbumArtist to be changed. We may have discovered the “fix”.

Yes

/srv/av/music/Marc Burt/Poles Apart (2017)/01 Poles Apart.mp3

I was using that format but the “how to prepare your media” guides suggested that Artist Dash Album was preferred. Frankly, however, I prefer the artist name as its own folder.

I do and I can’t believe that this problem is so well-known that voodoo is needed to get around it instead of Plex fixing it. I’ll never buy a “Plex pass” from a company that can’t be bothered to fix such high-priority bugs.

You can leave it at last.fm
if you change the order of the agents as laid out above.
Then your embedded metadata are used preferably and only missing stuff is fetched from last.fm
(like for instance artist info&photo)

No thanks. In fact, I’ve already blocked last.fm from my network entirely to prevent it from screwing things up again.
