I can tell you that when I try to play the show - on Tautulli it says :
STREAM Direct Play
CONTAINER Direct Play (AVI)
VIDEO Direct Play (MPEG4 SD)
So according to Plex, it’s not even trying to transcode the file.
But I think you’re on to something with the communication issue between Plex and Roku (I did confirm that I have the same problem upstairs on another Roku TV). So can we focus on opening whatever ports are necessary to get this working again?
That is good to know it’s not specific to the TV. I’m at a loss why the Roku cannot talk to a specific URL. The Roku is able to reach your PMS, so the ports are open, but it seems to be timing out on a specific URL required for transcoding.
Would you be able to share the affected library with me, so I can test remotely to see if I can replicate it here? If so, please share it with ljunkie+testing
Do you have another computer on the network to run PMS on. Mainly just curious if you can replicate the same issue on another PMS from within your local network.
OK - so trying everything - I have my TCL Roku TV hooked up wireless to the network (it is literally a foot away from the router) because I’ve been told it’s actually way faster than a TV wired connection.
Well - when wired to the router, suddenly all my videos play fine.
Of course that doesn’t help me upstairs where I have no way to plug in. But it appears this is a TCL Roku tv issue and not a Plex Issue, so I guess I’ll be done here for now.
Good call. When you are using the LAN, it will be switched directly from Roku → PMS. When using WiFi it will traverse the AP/router. It sounds like the router is somehow dropping the request. Try rebooting the router, and checking if there is any firmware updates for it.
I know you said you had different results with wired. Now I’m curious what your connectivity looks like. Many mobile network access routers have weird network rules and limitations.
OK -
I attached the tv to my phone’s internet as a hotspot and lo and behold - the video played just fine.
So yes - the problem is the Router. Netgear X6 R8000.
Any idea what little setting is causing this communication issue? I’m not 100% informed on what AP isolation is - but AP MODE on the router is not enabled.
It’s a new router - I’ve had it a few weeks so likely I just haven’t watched any shows that have this issue and I’m just noticing it - but I can’t figure out which setting is causing the issue.
Is there a way to open up the specific port for the transcoding conversation? I can play the file on my computer, on my phone and now on my Roku when it’s connected to the router via cable. But neither Roku tv can play the file when connected with WIFI - even though it’s a strong signal and over 70 Mbps.
Ahhhhh! When I saw “5G” I wanted to be sure you didn’t mean a mobile/cellular network - you know, the ones that cause COVID.
I assume you weren’t using a guest wifi network ssid? You could test turning off any “Circle” and “Netgear Armor” features. Those might block or change DNS requests, or otherwise impact traffic between wireless and wired.
Does that router, which has lots of security features, provide any obvious controls for traffic that can go between wired and wireless? If not, I become suspicious about any other “protection” features that might be inspecting and interfering with traffic.
All conversations are happening on the same port, so no because it’s already opened. Your router is dripping the specific requests (urls) for unknown reasons. The last resort I have is factory resetting that thing and setting it up again.
I don’t use any of the extra security features like Armor, etc.
I have UPnP enabled.
I know there’s a simple solution somewhere - some dumb setting that’s causing Roku not to be able to tell Plex to transcode a show. It’s only the Roku app - and only when on WIFI.
There’s gotta be something in the logs that describes what to fix…
FWIW I’ve also got a TCL Roku series 5. It only updated to 9.3 a few days ago. I know that before 9.3 I have done all combinations of wired/wireless/direct/remux/transcode successfully. I’ll confirm that it works with transcoding video on wireless tonight, if that’s helpful.
The only thing in the logs confirms the Roku cannot successfully hit the transcode endpoint. The request is being dropped, however that is not happening with you connect to LAN or when you connect to the mobile hotspot using WiFi, so that is all pointing to the router WiFi, not the TV.
That is happening because due to the request that is failing. The Roku does not make a different request being connected to WiFi or LAN
I would suggest trying to setup a new SSID (wifi network) using 2.4Ghz and another use 5ghz. If that doesn’t work, please try factory resetting the router and trying it again. It may be an exercise in futility, but it’s worth attempting it. It may also be worth looking for older firmware to load the router.
Oh! Do you have different settings on the TV/Roku for Wi-Fi and LAN? Are they both set to automatic/DHCP, or does one of them have static/hardcoded/address/dns configured?
