Synology DS220j chokes with Plex roku client

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4523-6000
Player Version#: 6.7.24.7009.0d0d064dd-Plex

I own a Synology DS220j. The Plex client works flawlessly with my Apple TV. However, when using the Roku TV client, it absolutely chokes. I am only trying to stream in 1080p, from ripped Blu-rays. Video from 480p DVDs works fine on both the Apple and Roku clients. I have tried changing settings according to some articles I have found in the web, but nothing seems to work. All movies are encoded with MakeMKV. When I attempt to play on the Roku client, the movie takes about 15-30 seconds to load, and then buffers another one or two times, and then I get an error message that the server is not strong enough to stream. But with the Apple client everything works perfectly.

Is the video transcoding when you use the Roku?

Monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing. Expand the view to show details.

Is the Roku local or remote? Make sure it lines up with what is shown in the dashboard. If the Roku is local but the dashboard shows the connection as remote or indirect, then you’ve a configuration issue to work out. If the Roku is remote and the connection shows as indirect, then remote access is not working correctly.

If you’re using subtitles, try turning them off. Also, choose an audio format that direct plays if possible. Try AC3/Dolby Digital or dts. TrueHD transcodes on many clients.

The Dashboard is showing local, as to be expected. I am not using subtitles. Audio format is AC3.

Thanks for the info.

Is the video transcoding when you use the Roku?

When you see the “server not strong enough” message it may indicate that the video is transcoding. Your NAS has limited transcoding ability and may not be able to handle the load.

If this is happening, you need to figure out why the video is transcoding and, if possible, avoid the situation.

The log files should provide additional information. Please pull them when you have a chance.

Also, what Roku model are you using (I forgot to ask earlier)?

  1. Configure your server for debug, not verbose, log files.
See Reporting Issues with Plex Media Server for details.

  2. With no other streaming on the server, play one of the problematic movies until you receive the error message.

  3. Stop playback, wait 1 minute.

  4. Download the log files (Settings → Troubleshooting) and upload the entire ZIP file to the thread (Drag it into the message window. It will insert at the cursor location.).

Thanks for your help. I tried disabling transcoding, but then the file wont play at all in the Roku client.
Plex Media Server Logs_2021-05-15_14-03-36.zip (6.4 MB)
I get an error message stating "app cannot directly play this item, direct play is disabled.
The logs are attached.

Paste a media report from the misbehaving file (since you didn’t bother to mention what it was) here so we can look at it.

Log entry: Device is Roku (49" TCL Roku TV)

The movie is 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is VC-1/1080p.

The problem is the video is transcoding and the server is not powerful enough to transcode 1080p VC1 video.

However, I also noticed in the logs that the server is transcoding MPEG2/480p video (it does have enough CPU for that).

@JuiceWSA Thanks for jumping on the thread.

I don’t have a Roku.

Shouldn’t a Roku direct play MPEG2 video w/ AC3 2.0 audio - a DVD rip?

Doesn’t a Roku have some settings about enabling/disabling direct play/direct stream?

Any other device settings that could cause a video transcode?

I could not find any setting on the Roku TV that would enable/disable direct play/direct stream. These settings are only in the Plex client and server.

I should have been clearer. I meant in the Plex app on the TV.

… and now you see why Preformatted Text is so handy…

@FordGuy61 discovered the issue - Roku won’t Direct Play VC-1.

I have a dozen Rokus in play - and not one VC-1 steam - 'cause I know they won’t Direct Play and are converted to something that will.

Carry on.

Yes, the Roku Plex app has settings for direct play and direct stream. Changing these doesn’t make a difference

Is VC-1 an audio or video coded? How do I fix this?

It’s Video.
Handbrake… at my house ain’t no VC-1 gettin’ in here dressed like that…lol

Well… we convert the MKV File to an MKV file with a 264 or 265 Video Stream.

MP4s are so 2005

So convert the MKV file from MakeMkv into an mp4 in Handbrake?

Ok thanks for the help. I will get to it.

Thanks for the info.

You’ll need to convert VC-1 video to H.264.

There are many tools to do this. Two of the more popular and free ones are Handbrake and XMedia Recode.

This should get you started:

In Handbrake, try the H.264 MKV 1080p30 preset.

  • Filter tab: Turn off all the filters.
  • Video tab: Change the video from 30fps to 23.976fps to match the movie.
  • Video tab: Change the Encoder Profile from Main to High.
  • Audio & Subtitle tabs: Pick the audio & subtitle tracks you want to passthrough.

Suggestion if I may?

remove all those subtitle tracks you will never use.
PMS having to sift through them does take CPU plus it wastes space.

Ohhhh - so that’s what made the report 9 blocks long…
Yea - I usually turn those off at the source, but… that’s me.
