TCL Roku series 5 won't play most videos suddenly - is it software 9.3? HELP!

I don’t have different settings for WIFi and LAN, unless I do and I don’t know it.
I have two items with static IP addresses but neither of my Roku TVs. They get assigned an IP like everything else.

So now upstairs I have tried three different wifi networks from my router - a 2.4 GHz and 2 5 GHz SSIDs.

I run the Plex app on the Roku TV and everything loads quickly. It won’t play any videos though.

I thought the issue had something to do with transcoding old XVID files but really it’s a bigger problem than that.

Could it be the latest Roku firmware? Has the Roku Plex app been updated?

I can play the video from a wired computer on the same network.
I can play the video from a wireless laptop on the same network.
I can play the video from an iPhone connected to the same network.
I can play the video from an iPhone connected to the AT&T 5G network.
Curiously I can play the video from the Roku when it’s plugged into the router or when it’s connected to a different wireless network (using my phone as a hotspot)

If the problem was the router alone why does it happily serve the file to other computers and phones on the same network?
If the problem was the Roku why does the video play fine when plugged in or when getting its internet from a different wifi network?

(In case it’s not clear the Roku gets > 80 MBPs connected to the wifi network so it is NOT a bandwidth issue)

Is there some secret setting in my Netgear x6 R8000 that I can’t find?

I cannot be the only person with this problem!

Delivery of content between devices may use different protocols due to their capabilities, as well as some devices being able to direct play this content.

If the problem was the Roku why does the video play fine when plugged in or when getting its internet from a different wifi network?

Right. It doesn’t seem like a Roku issue, in that it can play just fine while connected to the local network via ethernet, or remotely while connected via WiFi to a hotspot.

(In case it’s not clear the Roku gets > 80 MBPs connected to the wifi network so it is NOT a bandwidth issue)

Yes. It’s not a bandwidth issue. The issue is specifically that when connected to your WiFi network, the router/AP is dropping the request. It never makes it to your PMS.

With that said. Can you maybe describe your network in more details. Maybe we can spot something there.

  1. Is your server connected via ethernet or WiFi?
  2. The netgear the only router, or are there are devices possibly acting as a WiFi network. e.g. a ISP provided modem with router/ap capabilities?

Well…

Thank you again for all your troubleshooting help.

I bit the bullet and factory reset the router and guess what?

Everything works fine.

SIGH

So if this thread stays on the forum the important thing for anyone reading it to remember is :

DO NOT BUY A NETGEAR ROUTER

Also - factory reset your router before pulling your hair out.

Thanks again.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That’s my biggest fear when I call tech support.

“Can you do something simple you’ve already tried?”

Yes, of course I’ve already done that several times. sighs

“Sir, could you please just do it? My script makes me ask you to do it, and my supervisor will scold me if I don’t make you do it.”

Fine, grumble, I’ve done it twice already, this is a waste of time.

[does something simple]

[works]

:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
I’m laughing with you if it isn’t completely obvious.

Having worked tech support before, my favorite thing was when the caller then accused me of changing things “on the our end”.

“Sir, I assure you beyond any doubt that I don’t want you to call and speak to me, and thus would never do anything that required you to call me.”

Every time this happens to me I think of the Matrix scene. “What’s really going to bake your noodle later on …” I’m sure I make it worse for myself by trying to exhaust every possible troubleshooting technique BEFORE I call.

Appreciate all of your diligence and efforts.

I would only add that this issue isn’t unique to Netgear hardware. I’ve no Netgear hardware and continue to experience the problem with my Roku Ultras, but only when I use the Plex app for Roku. I can stream the same content using the Plex app for Android and cast it to my big screen without any problem. Most importantly, when I do, my sever doesn’t break a sweat. However, whenever I queue up the same content with the Roku app, my server gets severely exercised and the stream fails. Never used to happen.

There’s an issue with the current Plex app for Roku.

This issue started happening to me as well. I have 3 roku devices and all 3 do it. The fire tv devices, apple, Chrome browser, and Android phone stream just fine. Started happening about a week or 2 ago after an roku plex app update.

I definitely think it is AVI file type issue.

I have seen it on my LG Smart TV as well as Roku.

They use to play AVI, so the player most likely was changed or PLEX Changed how it handles them.
