So have a look The Crown - Where to watch episodes online - Plex and you will see …

Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West are all cast members for the next two seasons of the show, S05 and S06. These are unaired and should not be picked up as regular cast (yet)!

The problem is caused by the fact plex classifies cast from the list on IMDB and for this show some eager beaver has created placeholder episodes for the next two up coming seasons and added these as cast https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4786824

Can plex please look into a better way to build these cast lists. This is one example of a show which is rather bad but there are many others.

BTW… Matt Smith is also picked up wrong here but I’ll create a separate thread for this.

What should Plex do here? I think the only feasible answer is nothing? Even though it’s weird at the moment.

It seems like the real enhancement would be for IMDB to not return show-level cast members for unaired seasons (after season 1). But I don’t know if they structure their data like that.

I disagree, there is some basic problems with the current show level cast. It seems limited to IMDB and also is certainly limited to no more than 10 cast members. This 10 cast list it ultimately the problem here. Its not that Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West should not be listed, its the omission of so many other critical cast members from previous and current season that is.

I see two improvements here …

1. Increase the regular cast limit to something much larger, say 25 or better again 50 We know plex should be able to handle this as movies have must larger cast lists.
2. Don’t just use IMDB to generate this list. TVDB and TMDB have excellent cast list so maybe some scoring/ranking system could be used to consolidate the lists for all these sources and give the best results. It might get complicated when folks have similar names but I’m sure technically that could be worked through.

I’ll also add that guest in episodes can be a bit odd but in some ways its better than the regular cast. I do understand guest list is taken from TMDB currently.

So I noticed today upon a TV Show metadata refresh that the cast members have now been significantly increased – see below:

I really hope this is not a bug and plex have indeed decided to fix the cast member lists showing everyone from a show sorted by appearances.

EDIT: Marking resolved as original issue is now fixed.

Yes, the change went out a bit earlier today. Show cast should match what TMDB has now.

A lot of shows may still have the older cached data though until that cache expires in a few hours.

Unfortunately a lot of what plex has done recently has not gone down well with me but THIS I absolutely love.

Also good to know the cast matches TMDB, right decision IMO. Any problems we can fix-up there and have it flow into plex. Much appreciated.
