The iOS Plex app needs to be fixed

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156.720010156

Okay, I’ve been putting this post off because I was hoping that the current update might correct the train wreck that the Plex iOS app has become. It didn’t.

First off, the GUI design is a mess, but I mention that only in passing as the GUI design team for iOS and tvOS have been asleep for years now (or don’t seem to care).

I was using Plex on my iPhone for years and it was working just fine until I was forced to update my phone’s OS version to troubleshoot some CarPlay issues which forced my hand to update Plex as it started choking on the new OS. That’s where the trouble began.

So first off, why in the name of the god of media servers were the standard iOS media playback controls REMOVED from the Plex app? Hmm? I mean the on-screen play/pause and the 30 second jump forward/back controls? Do you have to pay Apple every time that you use those or what? It’s beyond frustrating to try to manually scroll back in a file and wind up shooting back five minutes when you just wanted to jump back 30 seconds. It’s a horrible “design choice” if you even want to call it that and it needs to be set back to the previous controls ASAFP.

Second, the bug I was about to report seems to have corrected itself. If I’m watching something in landscape and I have to take a call or do something other than watch–the video fills the frame and it’s impossible to watch until I rotate the phone back to landscape. It had been doing this for weeks and was still doing it last night, but when I bring it up to grab a screenshot–of course–it’s not doing this anymore. I’m posting it in case anyone else has been seeing this behavior. PS: as I was playing around with playback settings, what I was seeing was apparently a glitch on the selections for display options. It was like original or zoom was selected without actually choosing it instead of letterbox (and no, I never touched them prior to this).

Here’s something that’s been bothering me forever and I hope this is on a list of fixes for the Live TV team. There’s a few things that haven’t been working–ever–as well as a new issue. Here ya go.

  1. Why can’t you access advanced recording options on the iOS app like you can in Plex Web? It’s BEYOND stupid. I was out of the house last night and I realized that the NBA Finals game had started and I forgot to record it. I begin the recording and (of course) I can’t extend the recording window as sporting events are notorious for running past the EPG window. So I had to record the two shows after as well to make sure I was able to watch the entire game (yay Knicks!).
  2. While I was recording said Knicks game, I wanted to watch the live feed. Uh uh, can’t do it. Since it was recording, it would only let me watch from the start of the recording–in the Live TV section! What? Every time that I’d attempt to scrub to the end to see it live, it would jump back to the beginning where I started to record. I killed the app, nope, rebooted the phone, nope.
  3. Here’s new one that just happened as I was typing this. I went to see if I could recreate the portrait/landscape issue in the Live TV app and now I can’t even watch TV!! I went to check the Giants/Cubs game. It’s there and I tap on it and I don’t get a video feed at the top–just the art for the game. I go to fullscreen to see if that would snap it out of it and I get “A server with the specified hostname could not be found.” I try other channels and I get the same error. Are you effing kidding me?? I run to Plex Web and the TV feeds for any channel work just fine. So for me right now, Live TV on Plex iOS is USELESS. PS: in case anyone asks, yes, I refreshed the guide data in troubleshooting (didn’t matter).

Anyone else experiencing this wonderfulness?
