I’d shell out a hell of lot more that $5 for software that was actually bug-free and did more than “Hello, world!”, LOL!
I know, I’m just speaking from my own experience with Emby. I stuck with Plex pass for well over a year before I gave up so it’s not like I didn’t give it a fair shake. If Emby goes south and Plex improves who knows?
The web show and podcast and others and libraries I’ve unpinned turn on every two to three days. Up to 11 times this month.
I finally just created a managed user to use since as an admin I get no control over my settings.
Have you tried disabling the online media sources instead of unpinning them? (as suggested by drzoidberg33)
I have started receiving emails from Plex advertising movies and web shows despite my switching these online services off.
Can any moderator confirm that this is in error?
You need to unsubscribe from marketing or all newsletters. They are not related to what is active in your account.
thanks.
That’s pretty unsophisticated for a software company though, isn’t it?. …so in order to not be spammed by adverts on topics I have specifically unsubscribed to, I have to forgo genuine news etc?
[edit - added the following]
I can only see reference to a single newsletter in my account. Are there any others?
thanks,
James.
You are correct that the option is no longer there. I have asked The Big Cheeses for clarification, becasue the support pages still indicate it should be there:
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201862428-plex-accounts/
In the “Account” section
I was told the two options were condensed so if you unsubscribe from that single selection it should stop the marketing emails.
Edit: actually it seems if you have disabled an online media source in your account it is supposed to exclude you from mailings about that service.
I suggest if this is not the case to open a new thread with some examples. Otherwise the issue will get lost in this thread.
If you created several plex.tv accounts, please look closely at the mail address, where this newsletter was sent to.
Maybe you disabled the media source in your currently used Plex account, but not in the old/test account ?
… then it should be an ‘opt-in’ service, not one when you need to waste time seeking help to switch it off, i.e. ‘Opt-out’.
This is making Plex not better than the services that they are now seeking to compete against or better than.
Right, that is the behaviour I would have expected (but didn’t get).
I only have 1 account - checked the email and it is mine.
thanks.
done.
This right here is a large reason these types of releases should be disabled by default, and enabled if the user wants them. I literally don’t have a single soul on my Server that wants these enabled. So, who was all of this for?
…and these Plex services (which no-one I know wants either, but hey-ho) should be clearly structured to look like everyone has two servers:
- their own server (the preferred and pinned one)
- Plex’s streaming server (option to use and pin)
…and then at least it might be clearer to a lot of people what is going on.
I agree.
I am using Plex as a tool for MY library. Not as a store.
There is Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime and plenty others that want to push their content.
When I am browsing MY library, I am not looking for any other content than my own.
And more often than not, it is not a question of “but it can be turned back off” It’s a matter of it being turned off by default, and staying off, permanently.
You’re spot on. WE bought the Plex Pass so we can share our libraries and now THEY’re trying to monetize OUR users.
I don’t really feel like switching away from Plex but I feel like Plex thinks US media server owners are no longer relevant when it comes to new features or the future of Plex.
I have the feeling Plex thinks we’re irrelevant but I don’t think that they realize that if enough of US switch to another system, all those other users they are treating like THEIR users will also leave Plex.
I’m going to end up moving away from Plex for this exact reason. The Podcasts and whatever other garbage that is being pushed onto my users is confusing them + it’s wasting my time explaining how to turn each new “feature” off. I just downloaded Emby and Jellyfin today to try them out.
Have you ever seen a company that didn’t want to monitize whatever they could? If they don’t, they eventually go out of business. Streaming is more popular for people under 40. The original purpose for PLEX is less important to potential users than before. My problem is I don’t stream. I have a huge media library. I just turn off what I don’t want to see. No biggie.
