The server is not powerful enough to convert video DSM 7.01

Before we start configuring something, I will present you with this.

  1. Synology DS418j (ARMv8 machine, 1GB RAM, 1Gbps NIC). (about as basic a box as you can get)

  2. Playing Gemini Man (I ripped myself). 2160p UHD, 59.94 FPS, 100+ Mbps video bit rate. TrueHD 7.1 audio. This is one of the toughest files for anything to play given the FPS and bitrates involved.

  1. This is the Shield Pro 2019 playing → Onkyo → LG,

  2. The CPU load you’re seeing is what this little ARMv8 has to do in Reading / Streaming the MKV file AS-IS,

  3. Now, with it stabilized in the playback session.

Setting up the shield is straight forward but must be done in sequence.
Let me know when you’re ready

Here are the decision points:

  1. ATV cannot handle as much “heavy lifting” as the Shield Pro can. It will need a machine which can transcode

  2. Synology NAS boxes can’t handle subtitles. Their CPUs are far too weak.

  3. Where to put the server ?

I’m ready to go. Before we start with Plex again, I need to get my Apple TVs back up. The Apple TVs I have are sharing the same network and is not running on Plex or Kodi. Everything with ATV was fine UNTIL I reset the Shield

On second thought. Since you are graciously offering to help me here, is it possible we can talk real time perhaps on the phone?

fyi. Plex changed everyone that didn’t have a username, i.e. people that signed up with email addresses, to force have a username. They created a random username for you based on your email. It is the same account. You should have received an email to your hotmail account explaining the change i believe.

i believe he was asking about plex pass because for you to use HW acceleration on the NAS you need plex pass. If you are just using the shield for the server, you dont need a plex pass to get HW acceleration to work. Although i believe it is currently still broken for the shield and according to your set up you should hardly ever been transcoding anything.

I run my server on a ds920+. Works perfectly. But i also have the shield run its own server with the same content from my ds920+ as a back up in case some file is screwing up transcoding or whatever on the nas. I use the ds920+ server as the primary though since it keeps track of what i watch etc. The shield is just a back up. I used to run the server only on the shield but switched because the shield just had too many issues. Especially if power went out and then with updates etc. ds920 was more reliable to me. I’d at a minimum have the shield on a UPS battery back back up. or whatever you run the server from. It doesn’t like random power outages.
