All of a sudden, I can’t connect to my server anymore. This makes no sense. I run plex in a container on my unraid server. I have had 0 issues connecting till yesterday. I didn’t change my password before this started, I did after though, because I don’t know, I got scared that maybe someone got access to my ■■■■ (yes I know it was supposedely hashed passwords but I don’t trust plex – not that I care as it’s a random password). Also, this started at night, I was watching stuff on Plex all day, 0 issues.
Anyway, I couldn’t get access to anything. None of that “Claim” your server stuff worked, apparently claiming my server wasn’t the issue, it just said I couldn’t connect to it.
Couple of notes. I don’t use remote access. I run my server internally in my netwokr only. I don’t share, I don’t need to stream from anywhere but within my own network. Again… before last night, NO ISSUES. Please don’t ask me to “check your firewall settings”. Nothing changed, I use pfSense, my router didn’t change, I didn’t change my network settings… nothing at all changed that should have caused this EXCEPT there was something that happened AT PLEX.
I removed the container and installed it again, new before going to sleep last night, and guess what… IT WORKED. I was connecting, I played a show, i left it doing all it’s metadata ■■■■, and went to sleep. Woke up this morning. SAME PROBLEM as yesterday.
So… WTF do I do.
Yes, I have started setting up Jellyfin… and as a part of this process I realized that they started charging $69.99 instead of $39.99. That’s crazy. I looked at my history and I have been with Plex since 2012. It’s looking like this is going to be the last year of that, unless someone can give me a simple fix.
Quick update. I’ve swtich to Jellyfin, it’s pretty dang good. I won’t lie and say it’s as polished as Plex, but it has somethings that are way better. For example, viewing your library is snappier. It has Chapters when you’re playing a movie. It buffers better (at least in a browser). There’s things that i can live with about it, so I will.
Just because “you” didn’t change something doesn’t mean something didn’t change. I would check that your router didn’t get a firmware update and something did change. My initial guess is your server’s IP changed so the reinstall worked since it will identify the current IP, but then got lost when the IP changed.
Nope. See… guess what happened… Plex is working. I’m not using it, but it’s working again.
My router doesn’t update itself, I use pfSense. My servers IP didn’t change I host it internally and don’t do remote access at all. When I want to access my Plex server remotely, I use tailscale to access my home network. I dont’ share my plex or anything like that. What my servers IP is doesn’t matter from the outside world. Internally, my server’s IP is static, and it’s statically set at the container level since I run it in unraid.
What happened here, is that something on Plex’s side was busted, this happened at the same time that everyone was being told to reset their passwords. I have friends who followed the directions to the T, and were fine, and then hours later, also lost their connections to their servers for like 2 hours, no understanding why.
And what pisses me off is that Plex can’t just say… yeah, something is up, something is absolutley clearly up. Nope, instead they want you to think it’s your fault.
NOT ME. I know my stuff, I’ve been doing this for a long time. What happened above, was on Plex and the way they handle the networking / auth.
I’m fully into my Jellyfin era now. I’ve got it now running on my Nvidia Shield, Roku, etc. All the streaming devices in my home now have Jellyfin as an option. I still have Plex, and it’s still installed and running just fine now. It’s a backup in case I find something that Jellyfin can’t do that Plex could do, and so far I haven’t. In about a month or two, if there’s no issue. I’ll delete Plex. I’ve already cancelled my subscription.
