The Whole Sync experience sucks!!!

Where do I start!!!

Okey I have an Idea lets start with the fact that if you select to sync content with one device and sit a wait until your computer transcodes the video. (potentially hours depending on your Hardware) Once this content has been transcoded you CAN NOT sync this (already transcoded file) with any other device you migth have. so If you want this specific movie in your Ipad and Android device, YOU GUESSED IT you have to transcode the file TWICE!!!

Not only that but if for whatever inexplicable reason you need to change the location whee you store your synced files in your device this REQUIRES you to delete all synced files rather than I don’t know, MOVE THE FILE TO THE NEW LOCATION!!!. not only this IT WILL DELETE the already transcoded file on the server. That’s right the one/ones you waited hours to transcode and guess what you can have the satisfaction of sitting and waiting hours again to re-transcode the files again. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Bottom line I Think this is ridiculous, this is a plex pass feature for God’s sake, we pay for this thing that barely works :(. By the way i read several comments about mobile sync and there isn’t much support out there when it comes to answering these questions. I understand some people might be more challenged than other when it comes to understanding how this things work, but what I talk about up there are things that should have been thought thru while developing the feature, I think they are very basic concepts that should have been taken in consideration.

Lastly for those Android users that are struggling with sync. If your files have already been transcoded and it is the hundred time you hit the SYNC button with no luck. Go to Settings/Sync/Sync status and scroll down to Storage, Make sure it shows that there is avaliable stortage to Sync your content SPECIALLY if you are using and SDCARD, if it is not my fix was: Go to Settings/Sync/Sync settings and change the storage to internal (which will trigger a complete and absolute deletion of your transcoded data on the device and server) and then select SD card again as your storage. Then again transcode the files you wish to sync and you should be able to do so after they are done.

Good Luck.

PD: PLEX come on do something about this It can’t be this difficult!!!

What you describe is how Plex Sync works, it’s designed for a quick 1 time transfer to 1 device. If you want to sync to multiple devices, the better option is to first generate an optimized version. Now you have a copy that can be synced to multiple devices without needing to be transcoded on the fly.

As for moving the file when you change the sync location, that’s a good idea. I don’t know if anyone has ever mentioned this. I would suggest creating a feature request for this.

I quickly found the sync feature to be lacking as well, but really get a good benefit by the optimized version. The only problem is that I have my entire library with an optimized version which eats a lot of space but that is the trade-off to have ready-to-roll sync copies.

I believe it’s been talked at a bit in the forums and I have yet to pursue the question but I find it odd that it transcodes when the device is capable of storing/running the original. I think if there were some logic (I may very well be missing the feature) as to storing the original if it is capable of playing it on the device then a transcode shouldn’t be necessary.

If you have the room and could potentially be requesting many files out of that library for sync, you can optimize the entire library. At this point I’m going with that gameplan and it’s working.

The operative work here is quick. still waiting after 3 hours to sync a 30 minute
tv show.
