This is a general question regarding the future of Plex.
I tried finding any topic related to this question on the forum and on the subreddit, but was unable to find any.
As a developer working with TheTVDB API, I just noticed their upcoming v4 API will be for paid users only.
All users making indirect use of this API, should pay as well.
v3 will remain working till “early 2021”, but after that only v4 works.
Of course this has my concerns for the future of Plex in general.
I can see this going a couple of ways, but I would be interested to hear if this topic was brought up before and I simply couldn’t find it, or if this indeed is a valid concern.
The newsletter I received from TheTVDB today, has this statement: A note for Plex users: TheTVDB is in ongoing active discussions with Plex. Please stay tuned for more information if you are an end user of Plex.
I doubt that neither Plex nor TheTVDB would like to comment on an ongoing negotiation.
I just received an email from TheTVDB informing about the upcoming changes.
Personally I wouldn’t mind paying $11.99/year for a user subscription if the meta data fetching is stable and up-to-date.
But I often have issues with new episodes missing meta data despite it existing on thetvdb.org, or that Plex just stop updating from thetvdb.org altogether and require me to restart the server to fix it (happens atleast once a week, perhaps more often).
Now, I don’t know if the above are Plex issues or TheTVDB issues, but I’ve find them acceptable since I don’t pay anything for this service. But for $11.99/year, even if it’s a small sum, I wouldn’t accept these kind of issues, my expectation how well it works would be much higher.
