Hi Thanks in advance for any replies.
First, I know my server version is “outdated” but this doesn’t affect this. I haven’t done much configuration on my server in months so the Plex Legacy agents caught me off guard when I came into the settings recently. I read the Plex article which recommends this new Plex Agents for everything and refers to the TVDB as an “older” agent. I just found that TheTVDB has been the only accurate source of three items that I put on Plex the past two days. The odds of this happening for three items that couldn’t be so far different in genres are VERY unlikely.
I’ll give one example which is Frontline. Plex kept detecting incorrect episodes. I checked IMDB, TheMovieDatabase and a Google search which all matched so I thought I I had my episodes named wrong. TheTVDB was the only source that matched mine. Something told me to actually check the PBS website and good thing I did - TheTVDB was actually correct the entire time. The metadata pulled in great after I configured the library for TheTVDB.
I had the same issue with 2-3 other pieces of media and this has never happened before. The episodes were either missing or out of order. One even had the episodes in the wrong season (on IMDB and MovieDatabase).
Who’s idea was it to define TheTVDB has an “older” agent? Also, does anyone know what sources the new Plex Agent uses? I’ve been ignoring that prompt to update my libraries but I assume it’ll eventually force that and the libraries to use the new agent before I open the settings and notice.
I’ve been matching with FileBot at TVDB for YEARS. Old Agent, New Agent, doesn’t seem to matter much and I’m getting almost perfect matches. 99%. At least.
I occasionally used to switch to TMDB with the old agent when running up against some of TVDB’s nonsense (The Actor’s Rodent Character Image, for instance), but IMO it would be MADNESS to switch the entire Plexiverse to TMDB for Shows.
TMDB is The Wild West for TV Shows.
There’s no Sheriff. They ate him and his deputy some time ago.
TVDB are ALL Sheriffs.
They do have strange ideas, but they know when a show aired, at least.
The new agent seems to be able to hold the Giant Foam Hot Dog Mascot Images down to rare sighting, so that’s not an issue any more. Fortunately.
There are still some kinks in the matrix. Like the Fix Match I just had to do (first one in a LONG time) for Eden (2021) (AU), named exactly like that at TVDB and FileBot named it exactly that, but the match found Eden (2021) the Netflix/Japan Animetoon. <—I’ll bet a tweek could work that one out, but if that’s the only Fix Match I have to do this month - I’m good.
Note: Just this minute TVDB changed Eden (2021) (AU) to Eden (AU). Probably accounts for the mismatch. FileBot arrived as the train was leaving the station…lol
how is listing that 1988 comes before 1965 accurate? TVDB has plenty of wrong data
I’ve always used TMDB just because IMO it has much better artwork and I don’t have anything wrong with any of my shows ordering. The only time I switch an individual show to TVDB is when DVD order is needed (FireFly). But I also don’t mind finagling things to just be how i want them regardless of metadata source, my BSG 2005 miniseries is S01E00 because i wanted it at the start of season 1 rather than as a special
but like mentioned above you can set the Plex TV Series agent to use TVDB
I can’t even see what show that is. Like my UI, in many cases - all I see is a white and blue smear.
If you prefer TMDB - you’re not putting the same stuff on that I am, but you can use any Agent you want.
I happen to agree with the OP - TVDB is more accurate for what I’m using it for - and they made an edit in the last hour to a show I added so I know somebody is awake over there… not being eaten… hopefully…lol
It doesn’t matter what show it is. That is Aired order which means the episodes should be listed chronologically the way they aired. They have the right date and still list it out of chronological order.
I have no doubt there is plenty of wrong data for various shows on both. Me or anyone bringing up a few examples is just anecdotal.
