Thinking about buying a synology box

I am considering buying the synology DS214 Play. Main reason for this is to have plex constantly on. I just wanted to know how easy it is to install plex connect onto a device like this.

Thanks

just bare in mind that the transcoding on these devices will be very slow. Except you have players which take over that part. But I never tried out the DS214play.

Installing Plexconnect is very easy on any synology box (I have a DS1512+), but the hardware decode/encode (Evansport) module on the DS214Play isn't currently supported by Plex. https://forums.plex.tv/topic/83851-popular-plex-support-for-ds214play-intel-evansport-ce5335/

As long as you don't need transcoding video, you'd likely be ok.

installing plexconnect was no problem an my synology ds1513+ and it's working great.

the only problem is transcoding (sometimes even on the 1513+), so i remux all my hd-movies to mp4-files with iFlicks and subler and they are running perfectly with plexconnect.

For the same amount you'd spend on a Synology NAS(diskless) you could prolly get a refurbished mac mini mid 2007. Then you could buy disks and enclose it in a ministack(fanless).

Do the math, check your budget, would always suggest a Mac over a Synology or QNAP, unless of-course your requirement specifically requires it.

I use an unRaid server to host my media and run Plex and PlexConnect.
