This is getting old. 100% CPU after upgrade, server not accessible

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058
Player Version#: Any (but I’m talking local access on the server itself for the most part)
Can’t provide logs as the server is not accessible. It is cranking at 100% doing Lord knows what, but it isn’t accessible in any way or form while it is doing that.
Here are the steps I’ve done at least three times to get here.

Step 1. Start with 1.17.0.1841 Build up a somewhat massive music and audio book library and then have the tv shows stop loading metadata and posters due to a change at THETVDB

  1. Upgrade to 1.18.2.2058 and the library updates and then…nothing. 100% CPU usage and that’s it. logs are cranking away retreiving stuff and humming along but you can let it run for days and it will never finish or tell you how long it will take or let you have access to the application while it does this. For all intents and purposes, it is now dead.

  2. Cancel application, revert back to 1.17.0.1841 and remove all music and audio book libraries. Clean bundles, empty trash, whole nine yards.

  3. Upgrade to 1.18.2.2058 and it launches in a few minutes. Works great. Start loading in a subset of music library and it goes alone fairly well. Start loading in Audio Books and the scanner hangs on a few word docs that are in one of the directories. It tells me it is scanning those wod docs for hours. Cancel the scan. Library says the scan is cancelled but the upper right says it is still scanning. Can’t get it to scan anything else. Reboot the server and it is dead. 100% CPU and no access.

Go back to step 3 and start over. For the third time.

This is getting really #$*%&# old. Is this a known problem with 1.18.2.2058? Can PLEX just not handle large numbers of audio files? Will this not be solved until PLEX decides to do something that people have requested forever and support sudio books directly? Is there a limit to the number of music files / albums / artists that PLEX 1.18.2.2058 can support? Can we have some real error correction in the music scanner so it won’t fart around for hours and just move on? Can the server bring itself up to functional BEFORE it starts rescanning everything (or whatever the hell it is doing) so error logs can be obtained and at least it might be able to stream a movie? I went around and around with ChuckPA on this a few weeks back and I’m wondering if 1.18.2.2058 just isn’t ready for the big time yet? But you guys are making it really hard to stay at 1.17.0.1841 now that your THETVDB scanner no longer works at that level.

I think this is the version that introduced the new music scanner.

Plex Media Server 1.18.0.1846 is available to PlexPass users in the Beta update channel

Starting with this Plex Media Server release, we’re introducing new and improved features for music libraries: better matching, improved metadata, better artwork, and more! There are no longer “basic” vs “premium” music libraries; there is just a single type of music library. Plex Pass subscribers will continue having access to premium music-related features (automatic lyrics, Sweet Fades, loudness leveling, visualizers, etc.) just like before.

NEW:

My server has been very stable on the .2058 release but I don’t have music or audiobooks in plex, just video. But I read a lot in the forums about the new Music scanner just pegging servers for a long time until it had redone everything.

I’m not sure how I’d start troubleshooting this. I might setup another computer as a “Test” Plex server. Then you could experiment with the music and audiobook sections on this computer without impacting your main Plex server. Good luck.

Funny thing, when the server is locked up the CPU is at 100%. After I ditch it and start over and get back up to 1.18.2.2058 and start reingesting the music, the CPU is around 24-35%.
When it is working the CPU is fine, When it locks up and isn['t accessible, the CPU is at 100%.

Switch the library type to Other for the Audiobooks instead of music to avoid the new music scanner.

Pretty sure “Other video” won’t return anything if you point it at audio files.
