Server Unavailable after update to 1.8

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2041-3d469cb32

PlexLogs.rar (622.5 KB)

Around 24 hours ago, I upgraded from 1.17.0.1841-d42cfa161 to 1.18.2.2041-3d469cb32. After the initial database update it seemed to work fine. I had deleted some TV shows and I wanted to do a TV show update, so I did. With 1.17 it usually took around 10-15 minutes and I can still use Plex normally while it’s updating. This time, it took around 10 seconds after I hit the update button before I got the server unavailable message. CPU usage on Plex Media Server were a constant 25 to 40%. Almost 24 hours later, it still 25-40% and server is still unavailable so I quit the process, restart the machine and check again. As soon as the machine is up and running, Plex Media Server goes to 25-40% and server is unavailable and it has been like that for around 30 minutes now. I run the server on a Windows 10 machine. What could be the problem?

Do you have a lot of music?

Versions after 1.18.0.1846 need to re-analyze all your files.

Plex Media Server 1.18.0.1846 is available to PlexPass users in the Beta update channel

Starting with this Plex Media Server release, we’re introducing new and improved features for music libraries: better matching, improved metadata, better artwork, and more! There are no longer “basic” vs “premium” music libraries; there is just a single type of music library. Plex Pass subscribers will continue having access to premium music-related features (automatic lyrics, Sweet Fades, loudness leveling, visualizers, etc.) just like before.

I do have a lot of music, but are you saying that even though I tell Plex to scan TV shows only it still scans the music? What about when I start up Plex, does it automatically scan music?

Yes. It was an all new music manager that needs to scan every file to identify, match and update your database.

Ah ok. Is it normal for the server to be completely unavailable during this scanning?

That was one area where they could have better communicated the unintended consequences of the upgrade and recommended you offline your music library and add it back a little at a time. The good news is that you used 1.18.2 which had an improved scanner.

It did introduce an issue where it would hang on music it couldn’t match, find the scanner log and tail it to see what is going on. The version after 2041 updates the TVDB agent which you would want to avoid till this completes.

Definitely optimize your database when you are able.

Ok, so if I wanted to remove the Music libraries and add little by little. How would I go about doing that now since I can’t access Plex to do that through the web interface?

Stop the server.
Uninstall 1.18…
Install 1.17
Edit the Music Library and remove the directories that Plex would evaluate
Give it time to finish processing
Optimize database/Clean Bundles/Empty Trash
Upgrade
Edit Music Library and add one directory at a time
You will probably have to fix a few unmatched items as you go
