One more bug to report:
On Samsung Galaxy Tab Ultra, if you remove keyboard from tablet, PLEX new app crashes.
Do you happen to know if this also works for Android TV? I really want to avoid upgrading my Shield to the new Plex app, but I need to reset it soon to fix some issues and would love to be able to load the older app. ![]()
EDIT: I don’t think it does, but figured I’d ask. I’m not well-versed in Android things, sadly.
New App has not yet been released for Android TV.
But sideloading is no problem on Android TV, too.
Unfortunately here to report I had to revert back to the old Android app today.
Using the live TV function is basically non-functional on the new app. The channel icons don’t load and it’s super laggy. Using IPTV. Downgraded to the old app and it’s working flawlessly. Going to stick on this version for as long as I am able.
I had the same problem. See if this works for you: Go into the PMS > DVR settings and refresh the guide. See if that fixes you not being able to see your channels in the Live TV section (assuming you’re using an external tuner like an HD Homerun)
Android app was working perfectly until it auto updated to the latest version & I started having the same issues as others have experienced. Followed the instructions to roll back to the older version which all went well. Once I opened the rolled back app it would only play for a short time before before informing me that I had to activate the app, as I had previously paid for the activation I followed the instructions to reactivate.
It appears that Plex will not reactivate the old app & somehow forced the app to update even though auto update was disabled in the play store. Any thoughts?
I don’t use plex on android much so i was quite shocked when i opened it today and got this new steaming pile of horrible garbage. This new UI is absolutely terrible. What person would look at this compared to the old UI and think its better? Visually its terrible and by the was its buggy as heck. If this crap gets pushed to roku i will be yet another person to jump off the plex bandwagon.
@WBoweIII I would appreciate your vote!
Happily
How about a poll asking if we can completely ditch the new android app and go back to what worked?
Ha, we all wish. Instead I’ve just been warning all of my friends and family that it’s likely that Plex will be going away in favor of a competitor. Really starting to get sick and tired of having to babysit every user have some sort of nonsense error or bug that’s only from the new apps and UI.
I am back again - just to say - the new Android app is soooooooo bad. I am using plex web to find what I want to download to my tablet cause the UI is terrible. This stinks
Same. From April to July and it’s still hot garbage. I’m using the old app on Apple TV now as my main and web for everything else. They know what to do to remedy the situation and continue to bury their heads in the sand. Guess what guys, it’s still not working!
From the perspective of the users that makes all the sense in the world. However, I strongly suspect that the New Experience versions of the mobile apps allow for easier / more productive data harvesting, which data Plex can sell for $$$.
So I doubt very much that there’s the slightest chance that they’ll change course on this.
What I have suggested a few times, and @McWanke seemed to be open to, was giving us the old app back in the form of a totally “new” app because they would have to upload it using a new app ID. That app would have a disclaimer of zero support, no dev going forward, and would simply be a stop-gap until the new experience apps reach feature parity with the old app. It would seriously take them 10 minutes to submit it to the app stores yet they just refuse. They claim nothing nefarious is going on but the longer we deal with this, the less we believe them.
The complete lack of any communication has been my largest concern. Even their singular communication update did nothing but try to gaslight and ignore our concerns without providing any insight into the internal decision making or a change in direction.
My assumption is that we wouldn’t like those internal decisions or reasoning behind them.
Full transparency here: my comments were not intended to open the door here. We have no intent at this time to release the previous app in any shape or form.
I also appreciate the requests for more communication. It is a big topic that is being discussed quite a bit internally. We did release a big piece of communication yesterday in regards to the change in intent to keep Music and Photos in the new experience for TV apps and the communication that we will be adding these features as well to the mobile apps.
This topic is a process that will take some time to get into a better state. But there is both intent and desire to improve things in this area.
@McWanke I appreciate the clarification. I’m curious, is there a legitimate reason to not release the old apps that you can speak on? It seems like such low hanging fruit to appease the vast majority of users. You could have a hard cutoff date for support even. It just doesn’t make much sense to most of us to not release it.
Releasing the old app (temporarily) would cut down the angry noise on the forums and the floods of negative reviews on the app stores. Which I’m sure in turn would allow for a little less panic internally and more focus on getting the new apps up to speed.
Many of us are still very pleased to see that our voices are being heard though. A slight increase in the frequency of communication would go a long way so it’s nice to hear that is in the works.
There are multiple reasons and while I am not going to go into all of them I will give you two as examples here.
First, while anyone that deals with app stores may have differing experiences, but there is a non-zero amount of overhead involved in deployment of an app. There is setup, management, and responding to feedback and submission results from the app stores themselves. We are choosing to spend our time focused on working on making the new experience the best it can be instead of spending the time and effort to run two apps.
A second reason is that it would be very confusing to have two apps. While you and some others would understand the context, we would effectively be competing with ourselves here and anyone that wandered into the temporary app accidentally would need additional work and messaging to convey that context. Again, we would choose to put resources elsewhere.
@McWanke while you’re here, any chance of getting an option to remove the library ‘carousel’ from the home page in the new app? It’s completely superfluous once you know to long press on the library icon.
