It’s not out for Android TV, although there are a few people with NVidia Shields who got the new app on them somehow by mistake. It’s the same app really, the TV interface can be called on a mobile device, too. But it doesn’t accept touch input at all so when you try to do anything it helpfully brings up a dialog telling you and giving you the ability to go back to the mobile interface.
Ouch… wow, that’s news to me, but honestly at the rate this is all going… it’s not surprising anymore.
And THATS what’s so dumbfounding about alllll of this. We expect those MEGA corps to do that as its infrastructure and complex set of applications and hardware must go hand in hand, often with BILLIONS of users across many devices and platforms. Let’s also add Google in this as well.
M$ has an excuse.
Google has no excuse but it’s on brand for them, they will forever be at the top of relentless app dev killing and UI changes.
These companies have reasoning that doesn’t match that of Plex though.
The companies above not only design OS, hardware, and apps, they also actually MAKE MONEY.
Plex has ONE job, ONE purpose, no different than being ONE note app such as EverNote. You have full intent as a company to focus on being that ONE product that serves multimedia and your job is to do that well and once you’re at well, you go for greatness, after greatness, you start challenging yourself and push the limits.
In the past 10 years since 2015, I’ve seen so many Plex projects come and go that it was sad that nothing survived long enough to truly improve on.
Looking back, I stand by my original criticism about how I said that there were just way too many incomplete bells and whistle add-ons that just didn’t add the value the ecosystem needed because they were often half baked projects that were very hard to work out on the backend.
They struggled as a company to get bugs that were 5 to 10 years squashed but somehow are now all of a sudden pushing at record speed with these updates recently.
Wait…. WTAF is this?!?!? Where the hell was this kind of urgency all this time?
I just…. None of this makes any sense but let them continue on whatever path they’re taking this train.
None of us seem to have any pull around here so it boils down to a take it or leave it issue for many.
I didn’t found that toggle on the new experience app, yet. Could you point me, where to switch the new experience to the big screen version?
I don’t know of where, if any, toggle is in the new app that changes it. I was talking about the old app. Have you tried actually side-loading it onto an Android TV device yet?
Not yet. But like the old app I tried putting it in big screen mode when connected via HDMI and didn’t found the setting yet.
That’s why I asked if you found it on the new app. I’m afraid they removed that option though.

pommesmatte:I’m afraid they removed that option though.
The most common statement in relation to the new app.
Yeah, the new app is terrible.
- Its slow; every navigation you end up with empty boxes waiting for the art to download. Even if you go back to something you were just on.
- Downloads also terrible; the skip intro / credits just doesn’t work, no more ability to just download the Next X Unwatched episode; doesn’t play the next downloaded show in a TV series, you have to stop go back and pick the next one; the watched status may or may not update, and even if you’ve watched it, it will sometimes show in the other apps has having a little bit more of the episode to watch.
- Once you’re in a specific episode, you need to open a drop down to pick the next one. Why? This makes navigating through a PITA. And you’re doing that to make the episodes watched, because it doesn’t always do that for you.
- The libraries / episode list screens are for some reason locked to portrait mode; again why? Before you could rotate it and see more episodes in the list because there was more room to go left to right with them.
Its not even like the UI needed to be redesigned; it look good before and it worked. The update makes it less usable and removes useful features. I’m sure there’s more I haven’t found yet.
And it seems like the only update to this is from almost two months ago and doesn’t address any of the issues people are raising.
“The Customer is Always Right” was the first thing I ever gave up on expecting them to abide by 15 years ago when the first statement I read was “organize your library OUR way or it won’t work.”
Granted, the age-old ‘folder naming convention’ is reasonable, the requirement for it does make sense in the grand scheme of things, but it was that initial bitter taste of unbending demands that kept me from using the entire platform in a big way until I bought my NAS, got the motivation to do that organization, and got my system actually sorted out a few years back..
Thanks so much for posting that. What an unbelievable difference going back to something that JUST WORKS.
With my Windows Server (latest version) and the latest version of the New (crappy) Experience app, I was getting error messages every few minutes last night. Finally said enough is enough and rolled back. Same Windows server, but now, no error messages. I can also double or triple tap again to advance/rewind.
The powers that be at Plex should be embarrassed for having put out that half-baked garbage. We are not your beta testers.
I would also suggest rolling back the PMS version:
The versions after 1.41.5.9522 have been absolute HOT GARBAGE
But is it garbage that’s sat in an alley for a month behind a restaurant in August?
Can confirm it’s that mixed with urine.
Same disater with ios version, where is dvr recording list, guide almost never work, often recording option while viewing a channel dont show, they neec to backoff and test, i think i cancel everything if not fix in 2 days
Thanks! You saved my life. The new app is garbage.
New server versions are garbage too? OMG what’s going on with plex development. Luckily I hadn’t any problems while watching from windows client so I don’t need to rollback server too.
Thanks for the heads up, I haven’t been updating PMS because of this and it looks like it was a good idea then.
I’ve been continuing to update PMS on Synology and haven’t noticed any issues. Rolling back the Andorid app seemed to solve all my problems. Are there specific issues that have been introduced in recent revisions that I should be aware of so I can keep an eye out?
I can’t believe this is still not working (casting from “New Experience” Plex app to Chromecast). I too have reverted back to older working version of Plex app and not doing any more PMS upgrades either until we can get confirmation its all working again. Very frustrating… (yes - that is something of an understatement)!
why exactly are newer PMS version also crap?
very sad to hear this is still an issue
