Here’s the problem. I have the option to generate thumbnails turned on for all of my libraries. I’m fine with the thumbnails taking up a significant anount of space on my hard drive so me and the people I share with can have the scrolling previews when we fast-forward and rewind.
The problem is, and I might be in the “not the usual case” category, is that I place multiple versions of the same video on my server. To be specific, I usually add a 720p version and then an SD version. Both versions are identical, created from the same source, just different resolutions. I’ve recently started to add 1080p versions using HEVC/x265 (file size is occasionally smaller than the 720p version -Wow!)
Plex happily creates thumbnails for each version. The end result, though, is three sets of thumbnails for the same video… I’m sure one set is all I really nead, since they are all in the same library, and each has the little number indicating there are multiple versions.
So, I’m hoping an option can be created to not create thumbnails for each version, and use the original thumbnails for all of the versions. Two benefits right away - less hard drive space used, and less work for my server.
I know there could be problems for people that have an “Extended Cut” and a “Theater Version” if they want accurate thumbnails. Not sure how to handle that, but perhaps an option in the UI to generate thumbnails for a particular version, similar to the way you can just “delete” one version
Hoping it can be considered.
EDIT: Since I’m already asking for on option to not generate unnecessary thumbnails, an option to delete the thumbnails for one of the versions, and use the thumbnails from the other version.
