thumbnails for local extra content not showing

I’m not seeing any thumbnails for local extra content. I just see the default grey plex icon. I do see thumbnails for plex external extras though. I don’t have “Generate video preview thumbnails” turned on, but reading the documentation it doesn’t sound like I should need to. I’ve re-run an analysis manually and refreshed the library, but nothing changes.

Is this expected behavior? Or is there a setting I need to change in order to get the thumbnails for local extra assets to appear?

Adding to this, I’m having the same problem

  • No video thumbnails are generated for local extras
  • It used to work before
  • Turning on Generate video preview thumbnails doesn’t help
  • generation of thumbnails works on other items like series episodes
  • when an extra is played in plex web, a thumbnail gets generated, however when refreshing the library, the thumbnail gets removed

Which server version?
Which platform?

Video preview thumbnails are something completely different. Careful if you haven’t much space on your Plex data folder. Did you move this folder recently?

Thank you for the reply

  • Platform
    Windows Server 2012R2 64Bit
Also tested on Windows 10 Pro 64Bit
  • Server Version
    Latest Plext Pass: 0.9.14.5.1595-5c6e524
    Also tried latest public: 0.9.12.19.1537-f38ac80

My Plex folder is on c:\plex, I use plex server. But I also tested without plex service in user\appdata\local (default location) and reinstalled plex service multiple times, every time with complete clean-up and new libraries. Always the same result.

Any Update on this?

Without log files there is only guesswork possible.

Which AntiVirus are you using?

This is still a thing 4 years later on Plex Server 1.15.8.1198. Very easy to reproduce @OttoKerner - just add a local extra. You wont’ get a thumbnail until you actually play it. Refreshing the metadata will make that temporary thumbnail go away.
