Too many DNS queries for "metadata.provider.plex.tv"

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Player Version#: Irrelevant

For the last few weeks I’ve noticed an excessive amount of DNS queries for metadata.provider.plex.tv. For example, in the last 24 hours it’s been 1,288,317 queries (which inevitably took down my pihole due to rate limits).

Logs attached. I can’t really imagine why. My libraries are not that large and why Plex would be trying to refresh the metadata that often is beyond me.

You will need to adjust your settings (either the PiHole or PMS).

This is how PMS operates. I’ve not seen any other complaints such as this.

Every piece of media does require multiple FQDN ‘cURL’ calls to get the metadata each of which is a DNS query… just like all those ads in web pages.

Here is how I have my system configured to minimize metadata rehashing.

A developer says you should check the TTL setting of the DNS server in your pi-hole. It might simply be set to an absurdly short time span.

I’m not sure if that would be the issue. I’m using default TTL and this issue started only a few weeks ago (I’ve been using Plex for years).

FWIW, I’m using Pihole.
