I wish I could downgrade my Nvidia Shield TV Pro and Amazon Fire TV 4K players but my users are not tech savvy enough to do this.
When will Plex correct this bug?
Thanks I will keep investigating. Would either of you be willing to share your movie library with me so I can check from my end. Trailers from my personal PMS and other test machines I have access to all work properly.

It workes on remote network library’s but not locals networks so that test may be insufficient though….
At least that’s the behavior I’m having.

I think I found the issue. There may be a bug in the most recent Plex Media Player Android version that causes trailers to fail to play when the Plex Media Server has this setting enabled:
> Settings > Transcoder:
Disable video stream transcoding
Disable transcoding of the video stream in transcoder operations. With this set, the transcoder may still transcode audio as well as remux video.
My Nvidia Shield TV and Amazon Fire Stick TV 4K devices used to be able to play trailers just fine while this setting was enabled.
However, now this setting causes Plex on both of these devices to fail.
This is an issue with the Plex for Android and not an issue with the Plex Web and Plex for Windows.
Can someone please test and confirm?

If trailers work in both Plex Web and Plex for Windows versions while the disable transcoding feature is checked, then we can have more confidence that the bug is in the Plex for Android.
I have tried this and found trailers now do transcode… This seems to be a good workaround, thank you for sharing it.
Trailers on web interface as well as on Plex for Android 8.31.x are working fine regardless of this setting.
On Plex for Android 9.x trailers will only play with this setting unchecked on plex media server: Settings > Disable video stream transcoding
This further confirms there is a bug with Plex for Android 9.x and hopefully now it may be recreated by staff/developers

I have a feeling this is not isolated to playing trailers.
I looked at Tautulli while it was playing and Tautulli showed that the video was transcoding from HEVC to h.264 even though my streaming hardware can easily direct play HEVC (Nvidia Shield TV Pro).
I wonder if other videos with certain HEVC (Main 10?) codecs would fail like trailers do?
What is the audio codec of your HEVC file ?
Please stop saying PMP. That is not the generic name for the Plex apps. PMP is specifically for Plex Media Player, which is the old desktop player app for Windows and MacOS. The correct terms for the players are Plex for Android, Plex Web, and Plex for Windows.
Trailers should be able to direct play. They are available in multiple bitrates so there isn’t a reason to need transcoding. Can you get me a new android log when the trailer transcoding? It is direct playing for me so I’m not able to reproduce the issue.
Just curious, have you tried playing trailers on a locally hosted server/library? Earlier it was suggested that trailers work on shared libraries from a remote server, but not on locally hosted server. Not sure if that’s just because most remote servers will have transcoding enabled, or some other reason

I’ve tried playing trailers from IVA and from local ones I have. Have not had any transcode.
Did you try to reproduce the error by first setting this feature on your Plex Media Server?

Oh, somethings changed. Trailers do not DP for me now. I can reproduce by turning off transcoding. I have something to investigate now.

My Shield also stopped playing trailers (when I scroll down on an item and select a trailer). It stands there loading until eventually it tells me to check my connection (the Shield is obviously online).
Any news on this topic ?
