Transcode runner appears to have died

Server Version#: 1.41.6.9606
Player Version#: 4.145.1

I started experiencing this issue a few versions back. Most of the time I am using a shield tv but we recently added a roku in a spare room and we have a basic android tv in the living room, both that require transcoding so I am seeing it more frequently.

After a period of time, the video “pauses” and a spinning wheel shows up. Looking at the console logs, an error “Transcode runner appears to have died.” repeatedly gets created. The only way to stop it is to either stop the video or to switch the video playback. Generally, I am able to toggle between Original Quality and Convert Automatically and it will restart playing as if nothing happened, until the next time the error occurs.

I have rolled the server back as far as October 2024 and still experience this.

I have played with disabling/enabling hw transcoding settings to no avail. This happens across multiple clients (Roku TV, Android TV, Web).

The server is on an Intel NUC, running 11th gen i71165G7 @2.80 ghz, Windows 11 Pro

Server logs attached (hopefully I did it right)

. Thank you for any help!

Is it possible to get logs from one of the clients covering the same times as the server logs. I believe android logs will have lines from the last week, so getting those should be enough i think.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I think I got the logs. I reran it so grabbed server and device.

Time stamp around 04-02 15:24:50.314 is the relevant part I think.

Thank you so much!

@BigWheel Hey there! just checking in on this, have you had a chance to review those logs? Or someone else at Plex?

Thank you for your help!

This appears to still be broken in the latest release, running Version 1.41.6.9685.

I was kinda hoping this was the line item to fix it:

  • (Transcoding) HW transcodes were still failing on some older intel igpus (PM-2756)
