Transcoded Live TV Stored While Recording

So it seems that Plex retains the entirety of the transcode data when recording a TV show until the show ends. During this time it is also writing the information out to the destination.

Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, and with a large enough drive, it isn’t. However, when I’m recording all the local broadcasts of College Football to my RAM disk, Plex eventually crashes because the Transcode disk fills up.

Do the moved segments of a recorded show have to be retained until the show finishes? For the sake of RAM disks being used for Transcode, it would seemingly be a lot better to eliminate these ASAP.

Yes.

Because if someone else comes along and starts playback at a different resolution and tries to skip around those segments won’t be there.

I get the “I wanna save my SSD” argument but in reality a spinning disk is enough and saves quite a bit of trouble shooting when something goes wrong.

But why not use what is written out to the destination rather than the transcode if we’re recording the show? I understand if it is just being “watched” by someone but since it is being moved to permanent storage, shouldn’t that be used for playback?
