Transcoder errors after updating

I updated my server today and after doing so the logs were immediately filled with these entries and users were not able to connect.

I’ve been noticing over the past few months as well that the web UI stream indicator in the top left takes a very long time to populate at times - this usually coincides with the server timing out, effectively crashing.

Which player are you using when this occurs?

I can’t find it in your logs.

I was using the web app, in terms of remote clients I’m not sure. This log was captured moments after the upgrade, I upgraded after I went to check on my server and was presented with a 503 error.

Please leave your logs there and then downgrade.

They have some problems to work out. Something got missed in testing.

we have that fixed already.
It will be in the next release.

The XML errors are, fortunately, noise.

The trick now is to find the deeper problem.

Find another player / anything where it works and one where it doesn’t then compare the two

I’ve got a user who just stated to me their getting playback errors in web browser as well as Plex for Windows.

Error stating Transcoder Failed - they’re trying to play it at 720p from 1080p I see nothing in the logs to indicate what the problem is.

@ChuckPa I just got an alert of a playback error from a users Chrome web player. The file being played works fine when I play it using the mobile app. So I’m wondering why suddenly web browsers are having an issue playing media?

I played the same episode in my Chrome browser and it played fine with original quality but I was able to reproduce it by forcing it to transcode to a lower quality.

The error message is: Error code: s1002 (Network)

The users connection dropped on their end.

“Connection reset by peer” means the other side dropped (closed) it.

@ChuckPa I’ve received multiple reports now from people stating they’re getting transcoding errors. At this point there must be something actually wrong. I have no choice but to roll back further, I was on 1.23.1.4528. The latest report came at 12:33am so that’s no longer in the logs.

Original quality seems to work fine, but my server at the moment will not transcode for some reason. I’ve confirmed this by attempting to transcode just a random tv episode to a lower quality and it gives an error. Definitely something wrong.

This is a log from just after I reproduce the error.

I’ve gone back to 1.22.1.4275, is there a 1.22.(2-3) version somewhere? This was the version that gave me a 503 the other day after a while. I remember the last version I had running for a good chunk of time was 1.22.2 or .3 but that’s no longer available (I need to keep an archive)…

Add me to the list of people experiencing server crashes when transcoding. This was happening with server updates as recent as 1.23.2.4656. I’m attaching log files collected after the most recent crash in case they might still be needed. Rolling back to 1.22.3.4523 resolved the issue.

This ^^ message is PMS (transcoder) trying to send the data but having the connection terminated (closed) mid-writing.

Possibilities are:

  1. Network
  2. Misbehaving client player app

Method to verify – Test for repeatability with other players

Do you have the .deb for 22.3 still? I’m only on 22.1.4275 because I can’t find my copies of the later versions, that or I deleted it thinking it was a “bad” version.

I could be wrong, but your logs don’t look complete. I’m not seeing the Plex Media Server.log files.

Confirming – All your “Plex Media Server” log files are missing.

what did you delete ?

I tried myself on a couple of different devices and I was getting errors when transcoding as well. I mentioned this 4 days ago when I uploaded my latest logs above.
