Okay, thanks everyone!! I still don’t get why Plex doesn’t give you the option to select 4k with a specific bit rate… I still do not have the same options you have @ChuckPa, but when setting it to “automatic” as you recommended, it indeed transcodes to 4k H.264.
I really hope this gets fixed at some point, because “automatic” doesn’t work for me so well, as it sometimes still needs to buffer (probably because my internet is fluctuating)
This is confusing now. I understand that plex isn’t able to do HEVC because of licensing. That sucks but isn’t changing so moving on. But if it can do H.264 4K in hardware, why isn’t that something made available now? Put it in the chain before doing a resize to 1080p. If nothing else, make it something that can be turned on or off in a configuration like tone mapping. There’s a part of me that wonders if this would fix the roku 4k subtitles issue since it’s not resizing. @ChuckPa thoughts?
Pushing 40 Mbps of content Peer → Peer over the internet? You can absolutely bet that’s the ISP peering points interfering.
I see it here all the time. A friend is 8 miles from me but on a different ISP. He can stream 25 Mbps maximum. (25 Mbps 4K isn’t the greatest but it is watchable. 25 Mbps 1080p is really nice)
Given how many of us now have 4K TVs, I will author a request to all the player teams to consider adding 2160p to their visible selectable resolutions.
