Hello fellow Plexers - saw something new today. Video was transcoding H264 to H264. What does this mean? What’s happening? No subs so not sure what is being transcoded.
Thanks,
Luke

The bit rate could be what is changing. 1080p 8Mbps to 1080p 2mbps
Just a thought. Let me know.
This is happening to me too on original:

I was also wondering if this is normal and nothing i should worry about, or if its a bug.
I can also mention that this is when watching in a browser on windows, server is hosted on linux(debian).
Are you guys using the ‘hosted’ or the ‘local’ version of Plex Web?

Im connecting locally.
I just saw my friend watching on the ps3 plex app, saying its transcoding from H264 to H264(not over my local network).

There are some situations where transcoding from h.264 to h.264 is totally normal and not a bug.
for instance when: subtitles get burned in, bitrate is reduced, color depth is reduced from 10 to 8 bit, h.264 level is reduced from 5.0 to 4.0 …

I have this exact same problem, here’s what I’ve got.
Optomise video for universal tv @ 2Mbps
Remote stream quality is set to 4Mpbs
Still transcodes the video (h264-h264) and audio! (AAC-AAC)? The video is being watched on Roku 3.
Also watching another optimised video (UniTV2Mbps) on my local network on my PC player app which is set to original quality. Both on the server and player. Still transcoding (h264 to h264) and audio too (AAC -AAC)
I think it just likes transcoding. A little frustrating because my little PC doesn’t like transcoding and it’s worked so hard to “optomise” all these videos and it’s still having to transcode. I almost feel sorry for it!
Any help would be very much appreciated
Tia

Yeah, basically all of my videos are transcoding h264 to h264 and it was after upgrading my Plex Media Server to the latest version. Can we please get some resolution on this? Something is abnormal here.
Make sure your Plex client doesn’t show an indirect or an yellow exclamation mark beside your Plex server name.
if it isn’t 1) , do this:
Settings - Server - General - ‘Show Advanced’
if these 3 checkboxes don’t look like this:

make them so,
Then restart Plex server
wait 2 minutes
take a look at your clock and start playback
let the video play for 1 minute
then fetch log files and attach them here
please mention the clock time when you pressed Playback
Should be right at 7:24am Eastern (Over the Hedge).
I’d rather not access this filehoster.
Can’t you attach it here to a post?

Nutshell:
Drag zip file to a message window and drop it.
Not exactly Rocket Surgery, but may not be immediately apparent either.
Here you go.
The ‘hedge’ only appears once in all log files. And there are no details in the log file.
Did you really stop and start Plex server after activating the debug logging?
I also noticed, that your server is busy all the time updating libraries.
How often do you tell it to update?
Try this one. I turned off all library updating settings. Started playback of Over the Hedge at 10:18pm Eastern 4/10/17 for one minute.
What is your client? Chromecast?
The server applies transcoding because:
Chromecast only supports H.264 Level 4.2
Your file is H.264 Level 5.1
Therefore: transcoding

OK. That makes sense I guess. Still doesn’t explain why after the latest Plex update transcoding seems to be so much more taxing on the same system. Oh well.
