Transcoding Live TV Fails on 1.43

Server Version#:v1.43.0.10492-121068a07
Player Version#:1.112.0.359-0d79a49f

Hi!

Since upgrading to 1.43, the transcoder is failing to decode the channel. Rolling back to version 1.42.2.10156 fixes the issue.

I uploaded a bit of the stream that causes the issue in the new version, and the logs include both versions (1.42 and 1.43).

Thanks for report.

Did you mean all channels or just a specific one?

All channels, I wasn’t able to open any channels on web, iOS and Mac app.

I sent a sample of a channel with issues. If you need, I can send another sample from another channel.

@logsys how did you grab the sample? I am having trouble reproducing the error with the sample you provided.

I grabbed it using curl using the URL I got from the logs. I also assumed it was a transcoding issue since I saw logs about the transcoder exiting with error.

If you need more logs with more verbosity I can provide as well.

Can you try proving an additional sample? And then maybe try playing the sample and if it breaks send me both the sample and logs?

Here is another sample and another try at reproducing the problem.

I tried opening the channel I previously sent you and also had no problem. I assumed it also wouldn’t work, should’ve tried it before sending it.

This sample is from the original channel I had the problem with, I just figured I would send a free channel before sending a small bit of a paid channel.

Hopefully you can reproduce this issue on your side now. Thanks for the help!

@logsys thank you, I can now see the same error from your logs

@logsys can you verify this build fixes your issue?

For me, no. This does not fix the issue. PMS crashed after a minute or so watching Live TV. This is on a Mac mini (Late 2014), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5. Running macOS 10.13.6 (from 2019).

PMS 1.42.2.10156 seems to be very stable.

Hi @chris_decker08,

Sorry for the long delay, I wasn’t able to upgrade until now.

Still no improvement from my side. I’ve attached logs using that build, there might be another issue I haven’t been able to identify. I haven’t checked the logs, so I’m not sure if the issue is the same.

Thanks for the help!

Hi @chris_decker08, sorry for tagging you again. Any news about this issue? Thank you

working on it as we speak. I fixed one issue but it seems to have uncovered another. did this channel play correctly on 1.42.2?

Yes, this channel worked correctly. I had to manually download the latest 1.42.2 from the debian repository to fix this: plexmediaserver_1.42.2.10156-f737b826c_amd64.deb.

any chance you can send the log from 1.42.2?

So I am able to refine the issue. Before I was unable to open the channel anywhere, but now I am able to open the channel on the Web/iOS player, but not on the macbook. It seems to not work even on the 1.42.2 version there:

I believe the initial issues has been resolved, and the issue now might be on the client side. On both versions, I am able to open the transmission on the web player, but not the mac player.

Since I was looking into this anyway I decided to fix it even though its not technically a regression. Can you please confirm this build allows you to start on your macbook (which previously failed)?

Can confirm that build seems to have fixed the issues, I can now view the live channels on the Mac version.

Thanks for the help! I will keep using this version until this is upstreamed to the stable version.

Hello!
I can confirm that the first build resolves the issue. I spent about 3.5 hours troubleshooting the issue. LiveTV was completely broken in Plex. I troubleshot both the HDHomeRun tuner, my custom streaming platforms - Tunarr and ErsatzTV. I kept digging and finally found this post. This should be a “pinned post” on the forums.

Do we know if this fix made it into the releases that just came out (ie 1.43.1.10611)? I’m assuming not. I upgraded this (macos) and still have the issue. If I turn on “Use hardware-accelerated video encoding” LiveTV (with HDHomeRun) still fails. If I turn it off, Live TV works fine.
