Transferring Plex Server (Mac OS) to Nvidia Shield Pro Possible?

Hey,

I’m a big HTPC fan and have always used either a MacBook Pro or Mac mini to play directly with Plex on the same machine. However, with the limitations of Mac OS with certain Audio Codecs I’m starting to feel that something like the Nvidia Shield TV Pro would work better in my Home Theatre room. Especially since I can connect 2 external drives to it and house my server files on an external.

My BIG question before taking on this project is:

  1. Can I transfer my current server (MacOS) to the Shield TV pro in any capacity? Including Metadata, Posters/Artwork, naming conventions etc?
  2. Has anyone else successfully transferred a Plex server from one operating system to another?

I went macOS to macOS and followed the following article:

I’ve seen others in the forum that have transferred to different OS’s but I can’t remember someone moving an install to the Shield.

My question is why not use both? I assume the Mac works well as a server and that you are used to administering it. So why not continue using it as the server? Now with reduced load as it’s no longer a client. Use the Shield as a great client. I would peruse the forums for Shield related issues before using it as a server. Seems like dealing with OS level stuff is a little more difficult. Things like database repairs, installing WebTools and dealing with storage.

Just my thoughts. I’ve got two macOS servers and Roku clients plus iOS clients. Keeps it simple and reliable.

Hey thanks for the reply! Yeah I’ve had no issues moving from MacOS to MacOS. I’ve done that several times with no issues. Just curious if anyone has had success going from Mac to windows, or in this case Mac to a Nvidia shield tv 4K pro.

My MacOS server is great and runs great, I just hear a lot of great things regarding the Shield TV pro. And seeing that it can run as a server and I still handle the editing and metadata from my Mac is very intriguing.

This is kind of a side project since I have extra tinkering time at home to play around with my Plex setup. I still prefer HTPC setup but curious to know if I’m missing out on better playback since MacOS doesn’t support certain audio formats and codecs.
