What would be the best platform for a Plex server with an extensive Library
Providing service for said Nvidia Shield Pro + 1 Friend

I’m currently using the Shield as server with media on the DS220+ connected by giga network but i suffer the spinning ring when i play most things (not all) sometimes for a minute or more. Wondering if moving the server to the NAS would help?

I have the Nvidia Shield Pro 2019.

It runs the Plex client.

Server is on another machine.

Everything sent to the Shield client is always DirectPlay ( Shield settings are all automatic )

I personally would run the server from the NAS and just use the Shield as a client.

would it be easy to move the server from the Shield to the DS220+ without losing the database?

It can be done but isn’t easy.

It requires getting in on the command line, making a zip/tar file and then moving that file across the net to the DS220

do you have a run down of the method? i can only see how to change server from one machine to a machine of the same type
im guessing mine will be different as im moving from a Shield to a NAS

To get to the command line:

adb connect  ip.addr.of.shield
adb shell

Now you have the normal linux command line.

df will show you the mounted file systems

The file systems you have mounted from the gui will be visible

From there…

  • cd to the desired directory
  • Use tar between the two systems to transfer the server instance data from host to host

This is not an easy process. You need to know linux very well as well as understanding both platforms.

Ok as im not 100% up to speed on Linux i decided to take the easy route of just turning off the server on the Sheild and starting a new server on the NAS (ill just have to manually select everything ive watched, no biggie)
so ive got 2 USB drives (movies) and (music) connected to the synology and the main volume (volume1) on the NAS holds Tv shows
when i add libraries on the Plex Gui the USBshares show their contents but volume1 doesnt and my Library doesnt populate

any ideas? I havent changed the folder structure in any way and it all worked fine on the Sheild but on the Synology Plex just cant seam to see the contents of the folders

Its ok ive solved the issue

for anyone who has the same problem i went into the Synology Control Panel, Shared folder, highlighted the offending folder clicked edit. selected permissions then system internal user from the pulldown and gave Plex read/write permission
