Treating Plex like your own televsion network

I was thinking the other day about how I would like to have a Plex channel that I could turn on at any time and it would be like a TV channel with scheduled shows pulling from my library at designated times. I’m imaging this like a shuffle feature with parameters the account holder would set. For example I have a library for Kid movies, Movies, TV shows and UFC/Wrestling set on my Plex. I’m imaging it ike a spreadsheet for Monday through Friday with 24 hours for each day and then I could then edit under Monday for example:

Monday from 12am to 6am play horror movies pulling from the Movies folder, then from 6am to 4pm play tv shows pulling from the TV folder, 4pm to 6pm play kids movies pulling from the Kids folder then 6pm to 12am play comedies and action movies pulling from the Movies folder. Tuesday I could do something different and likewise for every other day of the week.

Of course at any time I could flip on Plex and watch whatever I want but I think it would be really cool to have an option to play my Plex like a television network and just flip it on and leave it on while I walk around the house making dinner or as background noise.

The way I accomplish this today is with smart playlists.

So I create a smart playlist that has all sorts of filters like unwatched is true, genre children, sort by date added.

So when kids are there you just play the kids smart playlist and it starts to play the most recent tv show added that falls under genre children and hasn’t been watched so it will play X items of those one after the other.

I have one setup for my news i.e. daily show, desus & mero, and all other “news” so I play it at night and it starts the latest unwatched episode the daily show followed by desus & mero and so on…

Movies you can do the same but I tend to just see whats new and pick from the list.

This is not exactly what you are asking for but is a simple way to accomplish the same sort of experience.

@nokdim
What a cleaver way to do this, Could you explain how I set this up? I want to setup for my grandchild to watch multiple shows without interaction from me.

This link has really good documentation on how to setup a smart playlist, they are very easy to setup once you understand the concept and is very easy for young children to navigate to on their own and start for Saturday morning cartoons so I can sleep in!!!

This is GOLD right here. I never knew.
I still like the idea of having a pseudo channel though, which has preselected items at the same time each day.

Taking a stab at Smart Playlists, and I’m not sure it can do what I’d want. @nokdim, could you reason out how one would go about doing this using a playlist?

I’d like to select 4 specific shows. I have lots of shows that fit a particular genre, but I want to essentially narrow down to 70’s Sitcoms, and the only way I can figure out how to get that specific is by selecting them individually, which seems to be breaking the smart part of the playlist.

I’d like unwatched episodes of those shows to play in order in a rotation. Show 1 - Episode 1, followed by Show 2 - Episode 1, then Show 3 - Episode 1, and so forth… Honestly, if it had to, it could randomize the show pulled as long as it kept episode order.

I think this is where a channel feature, or maybe a more robust playlist system could be useful if it won’t fit within the current ruleset.

You can add those four shows to a collection. If you edit a show you can look at its tags. There’s a collection field. Take a look:

Then what you can do is create a filter for unwatched episodes in that collection:

Save this as a playlist.

Now, I have this rotating because it’s sorted by air date. I’m not sure how to get a rotating playlist if the airdates for your shows don’t line up like that.

Can somone tell we why the mentioned linked appear to havebeen removed. i say since other responses infer they have the links. No so on my displays.
