Windows 10
Server Version#:1.19.4.2902
Player Version#:-
This is the second time I’ve attempted to get this blasted thing to work and no matter what I try I cannot even get the app to even acknowledge I have a server running. I’ve reinstalled, tried every port, switches settings, and nothing at all shows up.
Getting the feeling this is some driver or software interfering as this supposed simple program is the biggest nightmare to set up. My plan was to control Plex with my phone but if I can’t even get the server itself to work I have very little hope this program will work at all.
Disappointing as the UI and features seem fantastic but actual setup is a 0/10 for me.
Considering you spend 2 paragraphs without giving even a hint of what you were doing…
Would you mind sharing some more details?
Server Setup
On what platform do you have installed the Plex Media Server app?
Can you access that PMS via the web interface (e.g. http://127.0.0.1:32400/web if you’re on the same machine as the server; http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web otherwise, e.g. if it’s on a NAS)
Did you get to complete the setup after installing the server (e.g. giving your server a name, creating the first libraries)
Client not recognizing the server
This will depend on how far you got with the server installation. If that’s not completed your client won’t see a thing.
Otherwise…
What clients are we talking about (e.g. platform/OS and OS version)?
What version of the Plex Client for that platform did you install?
Are the apps running in the same network and on the same subnet?
Did you sign into the app using the same Plex account you used when creating the Plex Media Server?
-Its installed on Windows 10 x64
-Yes that link works, however when I then go to add media from my disk it prompts me to get Plex Media server (which is already installed). Have tried reinstalling this to no avail.
-I don’t remember setting up a server no, or seeing a prompt to do so. Looking in the settings I can’t find the option to setup?
-By clients you mean devices accessing the server? That would be a Samsung s9.
-Latest version on both as far as I know (re downloaded again)
-Yes, in the past when I tried to connect phone to PC it discovered the device but would not allow for any functionality whatsoever. The Plex Media Server is running (icon in windows hotbar), and will open if I right click ‘open Plex’. I haven’t got to any stage of setting up a server.
-Yes I made sure it was signed into the correct on both, also tried signing in and out of both.
Also worth noting I use a VPN which launches at startup, I’ve disabled now but may have been active during Plex Media Server installation.
If you can access the version of Plex Web locally installed on your Plex Media Server but cannot see any content (or getting asked to install a server in the first place), this implies something about your setup went wrong. This can also happen if you did a re-install on a system where Plex had already been installed for a different user.
If that’s what happened to you, you could try to unlock this…
… or to do a clean install after deleting all hidden settings and data.
Your VPN should not get in the way when you’re streaming within your home network.
That being said… VPNs can get in the way and result in broken communication. Not using one myself – from what I’ve been reading in the forum, general recommendation is to establish an exception for Plex to bypass the VPN.
