Trouble Streaming Certain Channels in Web Player

@Mike-E

I suggest we establish if the failures you are seeing are always relating to an issue with the audio stream not being detected. So i would suggest seeing more examples. I do not need the plex web har file - just the server logs and times when tuning was ok and when it failed

Please use the latest version - available from https://plex.tv/downloads

In both tunes - the actual tuning was successful and channel 3.1 tuned within 6 seconds for the first tune and within 4 seconds for the second tune 25 seconds later. But for some reason there was no audio stream to pass to Plex Web for the 2nd tune

Great! Thank you for your attention in this matter @sa2000. The other issue here is that we’re running into the 3-month expiration cap for this thread so wanting to make sure it keeps alive while we figure this out.

I have gone through and attempted to load a channel in question. Channel 3.1 does a pretty good job of reproducing this error so I have used that. I tried six times, one was a success, and the others failed. Here are the times, in EST AM:

12:40:00~ - fail
12:44:00~12:48:12	- fail
12:48:28 - success
12:49:25-12:52:48	- fail
12:53:10-12:56:41	- fail
12:57:00-12:57:07	- fail*
12:57:35-01:03:12	- fail

Some notes:

  • ~ denotes approximate time as the first two I wasn’t able to record the exact time.
  • * denotes an interesting attempt in that it only took 7 seconds to fail, so this might be a different failure. Each time this issue is encountered it takes nearly 3-6 minutes to timeout.

Here are the requested logs. Note that I cleared them out before starting the above so the bulk of everything encountered in here should be the attempts above.

Please do let me know if there is any further information I can provide towards assisting in diagnosing this issue. Thank you once again for your assistance!

Hi @Mike-E I have looked into the logs and I suspect the problem may be to do with channels that have multiple audio streams - I can see that channel 3.1 has 2 aac audio streams - They both appear as being English.

When the channel fails - could you after that try it using the WinTV app and see if you can display the two audio streams details using their app. Is one of these streams an ā€œAudio Descriptionā€ stream? We do not support these.

I am discussing with the development team and may ask for stream capture - but for now suffice to try and find out more about the audio streams on this channel

Thank you for your reply and continuing efforts here, @sa2000. As for WinTV I am unfamiliar with this part of Plex. I did a search but did not see anything obvious. You will have to provide a link for me to check out if possible.

Additionally, I am curious on why this is failing in Web Player but Roku is able to play these same channels without any issue.

I thought all Hauppauge DVRs come with their WinTV application for scanning channels / setup and using the DVR (outside Plex)

See Hauppauge UK | Support Product Selector
and
Hauppauge Support | Product Selector

I suspect that the issue arises when we need to transcode and for Plex Web which uses the Dash protocol, we do transcode. Roku is probably direct playing. you could get logs when the roku is using the DVR for the same channel and I can compare.

Oh there’s our problem… there’s life outside of Plex?:grin::grin:

I actually do not have that installed and the only thing we have installed on our server is Plex and MCEBuddy. That is, I did a search for WinTV in Windows and nothing shows up.

I will get you those requested logs. Thanks again for your assistance, @sa2000. :+1:

Thanks @Mike-E for the channel stream capture and new logs and other diagnostics. I have referred the problem to the development team.

FWIW I will continue to check-in every month or so so that the thread keeps alive and does not auto-close. Probably the worst feature ever imposed on any content-based system – ever.

This continues to be an issue as of Version 1.21.2.3997.

FWIW this continues to be an issue as of Version 1.21.4.4079.
