Playback Error: This live TV session has ended

Server Version#: 1.25.0.5246 on Linux Ubuntu 18.04
Player Version#: Plex Web 4.70.0 (and earlier) on Firefox 94.0, Chromium 87.0.4280.88, Chrome 96.0.4664.45
TV Tuner: WinTV-quadHD PCI

I’m stuck at Version 1.24.4.5081. Every version after that, up to 1.25.0.5246, gives the error “Playback Error: This live TV session has ended” every few minutes on the Web players. I know this has been reported elsewhere. Not sure if the problem has been noted and the cause identified, but I’m starting a new post.

It seems the issue (only?) occurs on Firefox and Chrome/Chromium browsers, although oddly enough, I haven’t been able to reproduce on Edge 97.0.1072.8 (Ubuntu Linux)—but that browser has no Live TV audio (another problem).

However, the playback error seems to be server version dependent.

I can upgrade the server again and capture the error log if that helps. For now, we are on PMS 1.24.4.5081 simply so we can watch our live TV shows!

Thanks.

Glad you started here, as this forum is most appropriate for this problem. But it has at least 3 other mentions in various places on Plex Support Forums and I haven’t seen any response from a Plex Employee on any of them even though the oldest one is going on 3 months since it was posted.

I have the same issue but with Windows 10 PMS running on Windows 10 Pro Ver 21H1 OS 19043.1348. I have and HDHome Run Extend.

LiveTV fails every 3 to 5 minutes when trying to view from client web browser. Problem is both OS and Browser agnostic. Occurs with any browser and both Windows and MacOS clients.

Only solution is to roll back to version 5081, which has its own problems (often fails with this same error when TV EPG schedule shows new programming coming up).

Just annoying that many topics with shorter duration on boards already have a Plex Support rep responding but this remains ghosted by Plex Support even though has been an issue with 4 out of the last 5 versions of PMS.

Here’s a log. I reinstalled PMS 1.25.0.5246 and started watching live TV program “Arts and Crafts End Table” on PBS. It only took about 2 minutes or so to get the error [Playback Error: This live TV session has ended]

I then immediately downloaded the GZIP logs and reinstalled PMS 1.24.4.5081 so we can continue to watch live TV with fewer issues.

I have been experiencing the exact same issue.

I’m able to stream live TV to devices (Roku or iPad) with no issue. Again, Live TV /DVR fails every 3 to 5 minutes when trying to view from client web browser…

I updated to 1.25.0.5246 and the problem still exists.

I can watch TV from my HD Homerun Prime with no issue. I can stream from Plex to devices without issue. Watching via a web browser is broken.

I found this work-around in another thread. Launching plex from the following URL (as opposed to launching the browser from the app the task bar) seems to have resolved the problem for me.

https://app.plex.tv/desktop

Interesting. Maybe I’ll give it a try just out of curiosity. I have Plex Web setup as a Chromium “app” or “desktop shortcut” —like all our desktop streaming services. I thought I used the url directly for testing Firefox and still had the problem, but I know I used the url directly for Edge and it didn’t error out in the typical time frame. Worth revisiting, but something changed in Plex and its interaction with the browser web player and should be fixed. Thanks for the tip!

sadly did not work for me

Didn’t work for me either.

I read through one of the other posts about the problem. Someone from Plex (employee) said Web Player 4.70.0 fixes the problem. Of course, my post clearly lists 4.70.0 as a version that presents the errors as well. Obviously, it didn’t fix it in my case. No one from Plex has responded to this thread yet.

Same problem being talked about on another thread and someone mentioned that issue is better but not solved on PMS 5282. Still froze after 4 minutes, but recovered and continued playing. Tired of loading and unloading PMS so haven’t tried myself yet.

It would be helpful if the release notes said that they actually did something to fix the problem. But it’s not mentioned.

Just tried PMS 5282 for a few minutes. The “Playback Error: This live TV session has ended” occurred almost exactly 120 seconds after starting the live TV stream. Looks to be the same problem. We’re back on PMS 1.24.4.5081 again.

Probably because they didn’t  (see my other comment)

Thank You. I can see a problem in the log. I will discuss with the development team for Plex Web - so this was with the https://app.plex.tv/desktop app which should have had this fixed

Thanks - was this with a recently launched hosted Plex Web browser session - launched after the 17th November?

@oidarnam - to confirm version of Plex Web app in use, could you enabled verbose logging on the server and try a live tv dvr channel to stream and then let me have the server logs with verbose logging enabled - that will show the Plex Web app version
Wait 3 minutes before capturing the logs after starting streaming

Just to confirm, you want verbose logging turned on for this? I will schedule some time later today or possibly this evening. Which version of PMS do you want me to use? As far as player, all I can say is we normally launch https://app.plex.tv/desktop from Chromium, but I’ve tried Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. The player was at 4.69.x the first time it happened. It happened after upgrading from PMS 1.24.4.5081 and every PMS version since then and on player 4.70.0. I believe we are now on Plex Web 4.70.0 based on what it says in Settings-Plex Web-General: Version 4.70.0. I’ll post again later with some logs.

As a quick test, I turned on verbose logging and see this in the server log. I will do this again with a problematic server version later today and include full log. Far as I know, we have been on Plex Web 4.70.0 since at least Nov 19th. What do you mean by share dvr?
