TrueHD 96kHz audio clipping on Nvidia Shield Pro 2019

Server Version#: Version 1.29.1.6316 (Running on Linux, no Docker)
Player Version#: 9.11.1.36576 (Nvidia Shield Pro 2019)

I have consistent audio “clips”, dropouts, or stutters when playing movies with 96kHz TrueHD audio. The dropouts are predictable and happen in exactly the same spots. (e.g. ~6:45 minutes into Dunkirk on the beach). It tends to happen in high-action scenes OR right before big scene changes. It occurs on multiple movies (all with 96kHz TrueHD tracks). The video doesn’t stutter and it happens with both TrueHD 5.1 and TrueHD 7.1.

48kHz TrueHD and below movies play without issue.

My setup:

Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 → Denon AVR-X3500H → LG C2. When playing the content, the Denon will show that it’s playing a TrueHD 96kHz stream.

I’ve tried these changes with no effect:

  • Plex Refresh Rate Switching
  • Enabling/Disabling Dolby Surround Processing
  • Swapping HDMI cables
  • Ensuring Plex HDMI audio is set to passthrough.

My plex server is hosted on a newer i5-12500 machine with gigabit networking and the shield and plex server are connected to the same switch.

I see several threads that seem to describe similar issues but then also say that they are fixed in a version released around March. Any input is really appreciated!

This was seemingly fixed, but somehow returned to the previous state. It is currently still an issue with 96kHz files, but 192kHz ones are fine (as far as I can tell). One user here pointed out that this might also have something to do with the receiver processing the audio. Apparently, higher-end AVRs handle this better, but I was never able to confirm this with my 3500 (same as yours).

BTW, I’ve never seen a copy of Dunkirk with higher than 48kHz audio. What release is that? My go-to for testing 96kHz is the UHD version of My Fair Lady, as the audio dropouts happen just a few seconds into the movie.

EDIT: NM, I figured out which release this is

I’m actually having the exact same issue with all bitrates if they are TrueHD tracks. Even 48kHz

I’m having the same problem as well. I don’t think it’s a receiver issue for me since the 96 kHz tracks play fine from disc, but for what it’s worth, I also have a Denon receiver (X3700H).

Exact same problem here, and it only happens with high bitrate movies with TrueHD. I don’t know if it is with that exact frequency, but it is definitely consistent and also only happens during big scenes or intense scenes. The Atmos logo keeps popping up in the corner of the tv as if it cannot handle the processing and can’t keep up in particular cases.

Running Nvidia Shield Pro Direct Play 4K Remuxes on latest version

I have this issue with almost all types of truehd media. low and high bitrate.

I’m seeing this issue with Dolby true hd (micro cutting out typically at intense or loud scenes)

Did you ever find a solution to your truehd files audio clipping?

It’s doing it on my freshly backed up copy of my UHD Super Mario Bros Movie, and its bugging me! Small cutout during a scene where bowser’s koopa troopas are playing punk rock music, cuts out and almost sounds like they were censoring / bleeping a bad word out (pretty hilarious, if it weren’t such a frustrating issue with plex/shield!)

Kodi - it doesn’t display this problem on this test case MKV of the film.

Thanks for posting, would love to know what you did.

I haven’t watched anything in a long time, but like others here have stated, this is still an issue with 96 kHz audio files. The Super Mario Bros Movie has a standard 48 kHz track, so that should work without any issues. Haven’t watched it yet, but been planning to do so, maybe tonight. Will post my findings.

Let me know how it goes for you, I ripped my copy using makemkv taking the video and truehd track direct from the disc. My Plex server is my PC and the shield is the client only.

Always a fun adventure with the shield and 4k content!

Watched it last night. No audio issues to report. Shield Pro 2019 and Denon 3500H.

Ok. So sporadic. That is the nature of these hiccups I suppose with everyone having different equipment.

Kodi playing my Atmos movie audio without cut outs…will wait until this eventually gets sorted out so I can go back to Plex 100% of the time.
