TrueHD Dolby Atmos - Stuttering on LGCX + Nvidia Shield - Help!

Hi. Hoping someone can shed some light on something that’s frustrating the hell out of me. I’ve spent days reading forum posts and can’t get a straight answer. I can see that there’s lots of people are having similar issues.

It’s all to do with playing TrueHD atmos videos through plex.
Here’s my setup:
LG CX 55
NVIDIA Shield pro 2019 - plugged into HDMI port - 2.1 cable - connected by ethernet - 1gig speed

Now trying to play any file that contains trued lossless audio. I get confirmation it’s playing dolby atmos on the screen, but then it constantly stops audio and reconnects, showing the atmos text on the screen over and over and over. I’ve tried every setting i can think of and the problem just won’t go away. Any other audio format is flawless.

So…
Is it a CX problem, Plex problem, Nvidia Shield problem?

I’ve recently bought a LG SN11RG as well, so connected to the TV through EARC, and surprise surprises, the exact same problem happens.

If you want Atmos, you need to connect the shield directly to a Atmos compatible AV receiver and not the TV. Most TV’s do not support it.

If I were you, I’d plug the shield into the input of the Lg sound bar and the sound bar into the eARC hdmi of the CX 55. That’s how I do it and it works fine.

Thanks. I’ll give it a go later and let you know. Was trying to avoid that as i’ve also got a hue sync box that lights up the room depending on what’s playing on the tv, which relies on the inputs going into the sync box. I know that’s not causing the issue as it behaves exactly the same plugged into that as it does with the shield going direct into the TV.
Compromise i guess, but if it works then that’s that.

It worked!
So that’s it then confirmed - Its the CX OLEDs that are the problem. Maybe it will get fixed in a future firmware update, but as it stands, it cannot passthrough TrueHD properly right now.
I was lucky I had a soundbar with HDMI inputs. I was very close to buying the Sonos Arc, which only has one HDMI output (EARC), and this wouldn’t have solved the problem.
Thanks for the advice and a word of warning to anyone else with the same setup, without an external soundbar/AVR you are not going to get TrueHD with plex right now with a CX TV.

if you want to use sync for input switching

shield + other devices > hue sync > soundbar > tv

otherwise, if you want to use sound bar as input switcher
shield + other devices > soundbar > hue sync > tv

If you ever decide to get a full AVR, try to get one with TWO hdmi OUT
this way you can you run all your devices directly into the AVR,
then run AVR main hdmi OUT to TV, and the secondary hdmi out, to the hue sync

this way you can avoid having the sync in the middle of the hdmi chain and interfering with CEC and other hdmi switching issues
