Trying to do a new install on my new PR4100

Hi all hope I can get some help. I am trying to set up Plex on my 4100 A friend set it up as a couple of drives in Windows on my computer so I could just drag and drop all my libraries onto the nas drive. This was before I tried to install Plex on it. And I also already had Plex setup as a server on my windows computer already, When I go to configure Plex on my new nas drive, my old Plex server keeps popping up. and also the folders that were created from windows computer on the nas drive cannot be seen when opening the 4100. I really do not know what to do. will I have to reformat drives and start from scratch.? I hope not

If this is about installing the server itself… make sure to finish the Plex setup on the PR4100 by opening it locally (using the NAS’ local IP address from the same subnet; e.g. http://[PR4100 IP address]:32400/web). Once you finished the setup the server and linked it to your account, the libraries should show alongside those of your other server.

I have setup Plex from downloading the latest file from here and gone into the Nas to install the program a couple of times and I do not see the files.
Just to let you know the one computer that my friend setup the nas on, he made them as extra drives on that computer eg. drive m and drive n . I cannot see them in the nas server itself. i can only see them on the one computer. And when I log in on my other computer the files are not there either. they can only be seen as extra hard drives on the one computer. I can see the files public and timemachine on the nas when logged into the one computer. I think the one computer with the drives setup needs to be changed. Could that be causing my problems. What do you think

Are you actually getting to access the bundled version of Plex Web (using the NAS’ local IP address)?
If you cannot see the shares from within the local PMS, there might be some permission problem – thought it’s hard to diagnose/troubleshoot with the very limited information available.

I hate to be a knob but what do you mean by bundled version. and I am in the nas server now.

For your day-to-day activities you’ll usually use a Plex app or the hosted web apphttps://app.plex.tv/desktop.
For certain tasks (like setting up the server), you’ll need to access the version of Plex Web that’s installed locally on your server. You can access that while the server is running using the machine’s local IP address (no fancy local URL) → http://[PR4100 IP address]:32400/web – to do that you’ll need to be on the same subnet as the server

Okay when I go into the plex app on the nas and go to configure it it is taking me to my plex home screen and asks to pick a user the server that is setup on my computer and the one on the nas when I pick the one on the nas I do not see where I can add the library that is on the nas. sorry to be a pain. maybe I just getting to old for this.

let’s get specific… what URL do you get to see if you open Plex on the NAS in your browser?

I am seeing the nas in the url is it possible that I am not waiting long enough for the library to populate.

how?
as some local IP address, a local domain name, some URL pointing to mycloud.com (or the likes)?

http://192.168.1.43:32400/web/index.html#!/

when you go to the Settings on the web app based on that address – do you see the actual server settings or only those for Plex Web?

yes the server settings are there when I go to manage Libraries there is the one folder movies and all it is doing is a scan and I do not see anything coming up in it

And it’s the server settings of the PMS on your NAS? (just double-checking).

Can you create a new library in Plex on the NAS?
e.g.

  • from the home screen sidebar → click More, hover over the server name and click the + icon
  • from Settings > [Server Name] > Manage > Libraries->Add Library`

If you can… are you able to see any folders of the NAS from the Add Folder section of the library creation?

I am in the manage libraries folder now and when I go to the files on the nas it shows Public folder. Timemachine folder, Volume 1 and volume 2 with sub folders on the right

If you drill further down in the Volume 1 / Volume 2 folders – do you get to see any of your shares / media folders?

I am looking now lot of sub folders please give me a min.

I have gone through the file structure and I do not see any of the files

I’m not familiar with the WD NAS user interface… if you navigate your files from within the NAS web interface itself… is there an option to see the full path / technical details of the files to give you a pointer as for where to search them?

I am not that great on where the usage of the nas but I have gone through all of it.
I am in the process of copying all the files that were put onto to it to a couple of portable drives. I think the only solution is to reformat the nas. then delete the drives that were made on the computer for the nas and start from scratch. Than try and make new folders on the nas or just use one of the ones on it to make my plex library. like the one that says public. what do you think?
