Trying to setup Plex Server on my QNAP TS-653D NAS

Server Version#: Version 3.108.2
Player Version#:

Hi all, I have the QNAP TS-653D nas and installed the Plex server app on it. I launched it and it opened a browser with it on my PC. But its not seeing the plex server. why isn’t it seeing itself?
I already made sure the nas has the latest version, or at least there are no updated versions according to the nas.

thanks.

John

John,

  1. Sign out of app.plex.tv
  2. Restart browser
  3. Verify your QNAP and PC are on the same RFC-1918 compliant LAN
  4. Open the QNAP by direct http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web

I did that and the same thing happens. do I have to open the site http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web directly or should I log into the NAS and launch it from there? and both the PC and NAS are on the same lan. they are both plugged into the same switch. I even tried rebooting the PC. I’ll try rebooting the nas now.

ok i rebooted the nas, logged into the nas, launched the Plex server app and a browser opens up on my PC. the first thing is says is “this application is at [nas ip address] and is not hosted by Plex. Continue only if you recognize this server and wish to grant access”. so I continue and sign in. and its still looking for a plex server and can’t find one.

john,
Do you have the “PlexData” share visible in FileStation?
If so, please click into it and then into “Plex Media Server”.
If not, go to Shared Folders and give your admin username permission to read/write it.
If it doesn’t exist, create the share PlexData and restart Plex then continue below after following the PlexData -> Plex Media Server link.

There, you’ll see the Logs directory. Please right-click Logs and compress to a ZIP file.
When finished (should only take a few seconds) please download and attach here so I can see what it’s doing.

Where should the PlexData share be exactly? is it a folder in the system volume I created to install the nas applications? its weird because had Plex Server installed on the system volume, but there are no files in there for plex, its like its not installed. but I did install it and I do have the icon on the desktop of the nas. Where exactly do I create the PlexData share? Sorry I know i’m a noob, but thanks for your help.

It’s fine to create it on DataVol1.

It’s a proper shared folder. It will contain one 4K byte entry unless you put more in there.

I use it for one purpose: I create a link to /share/CACHEDEV*_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server so you can access it via FileStation instead of needing to SSH into it.

Yes, this is the same that PMSLibShare creates however Dane22 and I have been able to take this one step further. When you use ‘Migrate To’ to move the app to another DataVol (e.g. HDD -> SSD), it will automatically adjust. PMSLibShare does not.

Let me tell you what I did. when I first got the nas, I was playing around with it, learning what I can with small spare drives. so I was creating storage pools, volumes, experimenting with them, then deleting them, etc. then when I got my hardrives, I created Storage Pool 1 on a drive and created a volume called “Config” where I install my apps. this is the system volume. I also created Storage Pool 2 on 4 other drives and created volume called “Data” where I will have all my data. So on the “Config” volume there is already two shares called Public and Web. I created a third share called PlexData. Then I logged out of Plex (on the web browser) and closed the browser. I went to the NAS and launched Plex Media Server again which launched the browser. it said “this application is at [nas ip address] and is not hosted by Plex. Continue only if you recognize this server and wish to grant access”. so I logged in anyways and it still doesn’t find the server. so I went to the PlexData share, but the only thing I see in there are folders “recently-snapshot” and “recycle”.

John,
Since “Config” is your main storage volume, it’s as good as any to use. You are free to use any storage volume (if you wish). Putting it on the main storage volume makes sense.

I am concerned that Plex didn’t create the linkage “Plex Media Server”.
That linkage is created when the package attempts to start (PMS 1.19.5 and above).
It persists whether PMS succeeds or fails.

Which version are you installing? 1.16.6 ? (QNAP App Center listed version)

I already installed the app from App Central on the NAS. But I went to plex.tv site and downloaded the plex media server app for my nas. The file itself says version 1.20.1.3252. Then I followed these instructions in the link below to install it manually again. Then I launched the Plex app from the NAS which opened up a browser and it say "“this application is at [nas ip address] and is not hosted by Plex. Continue only if you recognize this server and wish to grant access”. So I logged in anyways and it still can’t find any server. should I reboot the NAS?

Go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop

Sign into your account there.

Settings -> Authorized Devices (Left panel)

REMOVE your QNAP server.
(We’re have it come right back with the next PMS restart)

SIGN OUT of web app again please (yes, this is a pain)

Are you comfortable creating Shared Folders and “Manually Specify” the path?
If so, please create one (any name you want as this is temporary) which points directly into the /share/WHATEVER_NAME_HERE/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer directory where App Center installs all packages. This should be your default system volume.

Now you should have direct access to drill into Plex.

I’m looking for a zip of the Logs directory. It should be on this path fragment: ..../.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server/Logs

If you can get that and attach the ZIP, I’d really appreciate it.

ok i went to the Config volume and chose to create a share called plextemp and in the “enter path manually” i put path “/share/plextemp/.qpkg/plexemediaserver” and clicked Create. Now there is a share in the Config volume with nothing in it except the usual recently-snapshot and recycle. I don’t see anything else. not sure if I did this right. i don’t see the Library/plex media server/logs folders. are they hidden? how do I unhide them?

Upper/Lower case is very important here.

where is the package installed? Your system volume?

Let the GUI guide you to the path.

It should look like this (.qpkg/PlexMediaServer) for the end part of the path.

ahhh yes I got it now. so I went to the logs folder and see a bunch of files. do you want me to zip up all those files and send them? there is also a folder called “PMS Plugins logs”. do you want me to include that folder to?

Yes. Go up one level higher… You should be in the “Plex Media Server” directory.
“Logs” should be a subdirectory.

Right-Click Logs and Compress it to a ZIP file.

ok got it, how do I send it to you?
