Trying to move server to new computer

I’m trying to move my Plex server from one Mac to another, but I want to keep the metadata and server settings to make it a simple transfer. However, everything I see says to copy the com.plexapp… etc file and I don’t have one. Am I missing something in the server to create a physical backup?

What instructions are you following? Try using those in this support article:

That file (com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist) you mention is found in the following path:
~/Library/Preferences/

You can access it by opening finder and selecting “Go to Folder…” in the Go menu. In the dialog box which opens, enter that path and click Go.

You can access the Plex Media Server data directory (~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/) the same way: Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder… -> Enter path -> Click Go.

I’ve been through this procedure and can confirm that it works.

Yes, I know that but what I’m saying is that I do NOT have the com.plexapp file. As a matter of fact, I don’t even have a plex media server folder. I have no idea where it’s saving it or what it’s calling it, but it’s absolutely not where all these articles say it should be.

Are you sure you’re looking in ~/Library/ and not /Library/? ~/Library/ (with the leading tilde) is shorthand for /Users/yourusername/Library/ and is a completely different path than /Library/. The former is user-specific, the latter is used by the system. You want the user-specific one. Unless you’ve customized your configuration in some way, that’s where Plex Media Server writes its data; even if it were customized you’d still have a symlink to the actual data location.

When you’re in the right path, the path bar at the bottom of Finder will show something like:

If you installed PMS as a different user, you’ll need to check in that user’s path. To do that, open Finder and press Command+Shift+Period to have it show hidden files and folders. Then manually navigate to /Users/username/Library for each user and see if you can find the Plex files/folders.

Yup, I’ve tried manually searching for it, typing in the direct path, even searching the application contents. I can’t find it at all. It is the weirdest thing lol. If I have to resync everything it’s not the end of the world but still!

Found it! Long story short, I didn’t take into account that I was remotely managing the computer my plex server is on through another Mac and the plexapp file was on THAT computer. Thanks for your help!

No problem, glad you figured it out. It was certainly strange to have a functioning PMS install and not have those files and folders.
